Im getting ready to ditch my socket a setup and am looking at the Opteron chips. Whats the best enthusiast mobo for these chips? Im using a Lian Li v1000 case, not sure if that matters. Thank you,

The DFI SLI-DR and SLI DR Expert mobos are awesome for overclocking. However, they can be a little bit...picky. Not to mention they are OVERKILL on options for O/C'ing. If this is your first system, you'll be jumping in over your head the first time you look at the bios.I have the SLI-DR, and like it. One other nit-pick is the NB fan is rather loud....but...YMMV

Also reccommended is the ASUS A8N32-SLI. I've read that it is a kick-ass board. I've been pondering upgrading to it, however, with the flurry of new parts (Intel's Conroe/Merom systems, AMD's AM2) I may hold off until later this summer, and just mod my case.

asus a8n32 if you want SLI or DFI sli any of them,

Id get any of these

sli-d
ultra-d
SLI-dr
SLI-DR expert

Asus
A8N SLI deluxe
A8n SLI premium
A8N32 deluxe
A8N5x

can go wrong with any of these. they all have pros and cons and are better in their nich
 
Ultra-d would be my first choice then either expert or a8n32 deluxe.
 
I just got the Ultra-D UT and found it to be THE EASIEST board to boot up despite everything I've heard negative about it. I'm running my opty 170 at it at a higher cpu burn than I could on 2 other boards because the voltages are rock stable. I love DFI. They make such great board: stable, easy to use and oc. I can't believe how easy it's been to use this board! I modded it to sli by putting methanol on a q-tip and rubbing it on the epoxy covering the chipset contact for 10 minutes until it softened sligly scraped a small amount of the epox off. Does have 8x pci-e lanes compared to 16x lanes affect perforamance as much on 2 x 7900gt oc'd 650/900?
 
Get the DFI ULtra+D over the 9npa+SLI. I've had both and the voltage regulation is not the best for overclocking your opteron on the epox. Plus the epox has several capacitors near the processor that runs extrememly hot (as high as 85c) and it spills over into the cpu temp probe showing that you got way higher temps than actual. However DFI's is no better either (at least with the bios it comes with) because it reports too low temps. Another thing I've noticed is the dfi does run the same Ce-6 ram hotter than the 9npa+SLI does. But stable voltages are more important for overclocking. The 9npa+SLI is off by about .060 to .090 volts over actual). The DFI was actually easier for me to boot up then my 9npa too. There were just a tad less settings to deal with in bios to enable. Mod the dfi to sli if you already have an sli bridge. I'm using my epox bridge on my dfi and it's scoring me 9500 in 3dmark 06 and 15300 in 05 on 2 7900gt's, despite it being 8x pci-e instead of 16x.
 
DFI Ultra D .... Love my setup. Spent some time on dfi-street.com learning all I could about the board before I bougth it and most of the horror stories are from user error. Clear the cmos when you get it and load optimized defaults. If you do a bios update then repeat those steps or it may not post. Paired this with a GSkill PC4000 (BHZ) kit and some timings given off of dfi-street and my benches and stability are great.

Asus A8N-SLi Premium was what I was running and it was a great stable board .. I did a straight across trade and am now using A8N32-SLi Deluxe and having good success with it as well with a 170 @ 2.6ghz @ 1.44v w/Thermaltake Big Typhoon hsf
