So im thinking of getting the e4300 + Gigabyte DS3 and am wondering if thats a good CPU overclocker? Are the e4400's or E6400's better? Whats the best price/performance Gear for overclocking?

I think I'd go with the e6420 if I were you. It has a nice 4mb L2 cache and is a good overclocker. Paired with ddr2 800 memory and the ds3 mobo, should be a very good overclock.

I guess what im confused about are the numbers...

If i get a 3.2 GHZ with the e4300 (Lets say 8x400) vs say a 3 GHZ on the 6420, Wouldnt the 4300 run faster? When i used to overclock (A while ago :p), all that mattered really was the FSB; an increase of 50 FBS would be worth more than 100 mhz easily. thats why im sort of confused.

FSB isn't really a big factor on the performance of c2ds. And there are things like the northbridge strap to take into account. This means (from what I've understood) that with a cpu that has lower fsb (example 200 for e4300 and 266 for e6xxx) the northbridge uses tighter latencies which increses memory bandwidth. The ds3 only seems to bump the strap from 800 to 1066 using an e4300, thus the max fsb you can actieve with the combo is under 400, maybe 370-390. But with an e6xxx cpu the strap will bump from 1066 to 1333 thus giving much more headroom with the fsbs. e6420 has a multiplier of 8, so you'd propably get it to 8 x 400 pretty easily with an aftermarket heatsink.

You can probably get the E4300 to the same clock as the E6420, but the E6420 has 4mb cache vs 2mb for the E4300.

But at least here the price difference doesn't make up the extra 2mb cache performance advantage, so i'm happy with my E4300 bought this weekend (and the same mobo as you plan to buy) ;)

Btw, a 400FSB will make the NB get extremely hot on the DS3, so you better buy some cooling for it aswell. I keep mine at 300*9, stable but i'm looking for a cooling solution for it, i can't keep my finger on it for more then 3 secs :(

Wait so you're saying its impossible to get a 400 fsb with the DS3? I thought everyone was doing 8x400 with the e4300 + Ds3 ?

You need to do some searching on the strap thing. ds3 can do easily 400 and above with a cpu that posts with a 266MHz fsb (e6xx0 series) but not with a cpu that posts with 200fsb (e4x00). So no, people aren't doing 400fsb on a e4300 but with e6xx0 they are.

Running 400 x 8 on my E6420 just fine, but I have a 680i board, so it's hardly "apples to apples".

Hmmm so say i manage to get ~3 ghz on an e4300, is that suffiecent for gaming? Im mainly a gamer i dont really care about encoding or anything like that.

Certainly is. But still I'd go with the e6420 if the price difference isn't too much.
