Best Music Setup(Soundcard/DAC) for Computer

THe title sums it up. I hear external soundcards are best for minimizing interference. Can I pair an external and internal soundcard (the x-fi for games and the external for music)? What are DACs and how are external DACs better? What are some external DAC options? Should I spend my money on an external DAC rather than a new soundcard or what?

PRimarily for MUSIC listening. I want something that gives me great sound. I hear the X-FI Xtrememusic which I currently have isn't that great for music.

#1 question is do you use headphones or speakers and what models do you have?

use the digital coax output on the back of the sound card to a DAC.. if using headphones a DA-10 will work well (although not sure on price)
