My microsoft zune 80gb just borked and it's out of warranty. No apple or microsoft products please.

That takes the two best manufactures of MP3 players off the list.... How much space do you need?

20gb would be nice but anything over 4gb will do.

Have a look at this. Just be sure to read the reviews first before you decide to purchase the product.

Cowon makes one of the best, if not the best sound quality MP3 players on the market.

It's $40 above your budget, so I guess if you prefer a cheaper alternative just go with the Sansa Clip. The difference in sound quality is honestly not that far apart whenever you play MP3 format audio

Either you're not encoding your mp3s properly or you need to upgrade your headphones... or maybe you're sane and not obsessive. *cough*

Your best option to hit 20gb for $100 or so are the Sandisk Sansa line. IIRC the Sansa Clip+ and Fuze share amplifier circuitry, which is some of the best in market. Either is an excellent choice. Decide which you prefer, buy the largest capacity you can afford now, and later buy a memory card to bring the capacity up to what you want.

Two other excellent options, but a little bit more pricey, are the Samsung P3 or the recommended Cowon.

There are some excellent reviews for all of these over at http://www.anythingbutipod.com

Sansa Fuze 2GB + 8(or 16GB) microsd card

QFT.

Any Sansa product, either the Clip+ or the Fuze, plus a microSD card to fill out the $100 total cost and you cannot go wrong. The Sansas arguably have the best audio quality going for the miniscule pricing nowadays. There are dozens upon dozens of threads over at HeadFi.org about them, they're absolutely amazing.

Some truly hard core audiophiles with audio systems in the low 6 digit price ranges use Sansas for their audio-on-the-go, I kid you not. Take a look at the threads where people post the portable gear they have and you'll see tons of Sansas feeding into amps like the Fiio and others.

Truly astonishing devices, great battery life, expandable with microSD cards. You can't go wrong, seriously.
