hey i have about up to ~$40 i'd be willing to spend on a new mouse pad. I'm using a copperhead that's still going strong, but i'd like to get at least nicer mouse pad than my generic one.

any suggestions?

+1 for QCK Heavy/Mass. Amazon or newegg usually have them in stock. Definitely helps reduce wrist stress and the surface is very smooth.

For some reason an original G9 couldn't track the surface properly but my other mice had no problems (G500, g5, Deathadder,CM Storm).

sooo the biggest difference right now is cloth vs hardplastic. does the surface make that much of a difference? i've never used a non-cloth mousepad before.

I used a hard mousepad for years (razer exactmat, looks exactly like one of their modern white hard pads except it was black). Thing was awesome for a couple years then it started wearing down the surface to a sheen. This caused issues where the mouse would get 'stuck' because it was so smooth and it would cause uneven movement / sensor skipping. Pretty sure this is typical for hard pads. I also seem to remember having minor sweating issues on a hard pad (I can't use mice with a shiny finish because they'll end up too slick to hold)

I haven't used a cloth pad long enough ( about half a year ) to comment on wear characteristics but I can certainly comment on hand fatigue. Many years of using a hard pad with no wrist rest (3+) damaged my wrist and makes it quite painful to use a mouse on a hard surface. After switching to a soft pad the pain has been reduced significantly.

I believe cloth pads are known to wear mice feet quicker than hard pads, but I haven't had it be an issue. They also tend to have more friction. It's more up to preference and mouse grip style as to which you should use.

Still highly recommend C4 Ngen. Nothing is smoother or lasts longer. I've had Ratpadz, Func, and Steelpad. Absolutely nothing compares to it.
