Logitech's MX310 and MX510 are also excellent gaming mice for under $40.
 
well thanks for the suggestions guys but I found a Microsoft Intellimouse version 1.1 (5 button) Optical mouse for 12 bucks shipped.

Do you think that it will be a very nice upgrade from a very old emachines ball mouse? :p

You could plug a cream cheese covered bagel into your PS/2 slot and get better performance than a emachine ball mouse.

to me ergonomical=ergohellno

well i lost the auction for that mouse but, I found a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 for the same price. Should I go for it?
 
mice really are a preference thing

Some people like lots of buttons and ergonomics

I prefer just a plane 2 button scroll mouse. Just whatever you get, make sure it is optical and you will notice a difference.
 
As for the nice deal on newegg for the IntelliMouse 4.0, it says "*Must be Purchased with Hardware!*"

I havent had any experience with the 4.0 with gameing but the only new feature is the side scroll so it wont help you with games much.

Microsoft IntelliMouse 3.0 FOR LIFE. If you're playing FPS games like CS or UT04 you're going to want this thing no doute. Coming from a very expericed CS player, this thing is THEE gameing mouse for me. I've used logitech and others and I cant believe they're even in the competition.

3.0 fer sho...you wont be disapointed.
 
I went from my beloved Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 to the new 4.0 and it compared to my new one, the 3.0 feels like a rock. It's still a great mouse, but the 4.0 blows it out to the water.

The only reason I can think of for choosing the 3.0 over the 4.0 is the ratcheted wheel for switching weapons in games. You may not have the same exact feel that a ratcheted wheel as causing you to not be able to use it as accurately (the wheel) as you used to, but that's easily overcomable by practice or using the side buttons or horizontal scroll. \

Onceyou start using the 4.0's non-ratcheted scroll you will fall in love; it's just feels so much better. :)

That just means they throw some old 100 MB HDD in the box to meet OEM requirements.
 
or you get a free power adapter or something.

Anyway, as always. You've gotta get a logitech MX500... I absolutely love this thing.
 
Logitech MX500/510 or MS Intellimouse Optical 3.0/4.0.

And for the OEM requirement, I think people buy a Y adapter or a cheap IDE cable or bag of screws to fill that need.
 
How much better is the Intellimouse 4.0 Explorer than the MX500?

Anyhow, I like the MX higher-up series mice (5xx, 7xx, 9xx), but a lot of people seem to like the new IntelliMouse 4.0. It's certainly a lot less clunky than the old ones.

Go to a store and see which ones fit your hand better, then decide. *shrug*
 
IF you want a good gaming mouse the only way to go is the mx510 or the mx500 that could be found for cheaper, the shape of the mx500/510/700/900 is much better than the mx310.
 
The best mouse for under $40 is the Microsoft Intellimouse 4.0. Its the mouse that PC Gamer and all the other gaming magazines recommend and its the highest rated even over the MX series. It has a perfect feel to it because of its ergonometric shape.

A few people here on HardOCP have said they wouldn't want one because of the "non-clicking" scroll wheel but MaximumPC even said that its a nice improvement once you get used to it. The mouse wheel also tilts left to right and will be another nice feature once game developers start using it. I've got one and i love it. I tried the MX series mice and didn't like the feel. The Intelli 4.0 uses the exact same 800 dpi sensor that the MX series mice use also so the performance is flawless.

Livewarehouse has them for just $20 which is a steal.
 
I would take a PCGamer computer recommendation with a grain of salt. :p But yeah, they're nice mice...if you like their design.

I prefer the more compact feel of Logitech mice in general, although a lot of my friends say that MS mice fill their hands better.

Oddly enough, I also prefer the original XBOX controller to the Controller-S, but whatever.

MS Intelly 4.0 is better than the MX series? i dunno i went through SEVERAL MICE... buying and returning..... and finally choosing the mx500 for my gaming needs, then ugrading to mx510 later..
heres the order MS Wireless Intelly 4.0 ---> Logi mx310 ---> MS intelly 4.0 --> mx500 --> mx510
the wireless intelly had noticable lag time, the mx310 was good but felt weird, the MS intelly felt ok but performance didn't compare to mx310, mx500 felt best and performed best, mx510 i didn't know they could improve on the mx500 but they did, subtle but definitly smoother and quicker

Well i do for internal hardware components :p. But i figure they should at least know about keyboards and mice considering all they do is play games 24/7. But yea i wouldn't look to PC Gamer for motherboard recommendations. They think the Chaintech is the best P4 socket 478 board lol.
 
I personally love the Logitech 2 button optical wheel mouse that sells for $15 at officedepot.
I've got those mice on all my systems.
 
Then again, drivers can kill a perfect piece of hardware, which in this case, is the MX500, at least for me.

The drivers are totally junk. It doesn't even have accelerated scrolling, which I am addicted to. I hacked the Intellipoint software to work flawlessly with the MX500, but, nevertheless, it's a hack, and I don't like that.

Looks like the Intellimouse 4 is in my near future.
 
I picked up 2 of the intellimouse 4's.

One for work and one for home. Bar none, this is the best mouse I've ever used.... of course that's just my opinion ;)

The ergonometric feel alone is enough to hook you. It fits my hand perfect. Once you use one it will feel weird to go back to the normal shaped mice.

Have one major issue with it, otherwise, the mouse is fine.

In games like UT2004, I use the scroll wheel to change weapons. One flick of the wheel, and I go flying through all the weapons I have available. :confused:

I tried adjusting sensitivity for the wheel with the Intellipoint software to no avail.

Can anyone help? :(

but really you have to try them out... personally i really hate the feel of the logitech mice and they have weird acceleration issues... but a lot of people are very good with them

I havn't tried to adjust the vertical scroll wheel yet. I just was playing UT2004 last night and it works fine for me. I like it alot better that it scrolls faster because i can get to the weapon i want in a hurry. You just gotta mess with it for a while till you get used to it if you were used to a slow scrolling "clicking" wheel. MaximumPC gave it praise for having the non "clicky" wheel and i like it too. I havn't went through the UT2004 settings much but are there any settings in there for scroll speed? In the intellipoint 5.0 drivers its around close to as slow as it will go as far as i can see. I actually cranked mine up a notch.
 
I mean, it scrolls fine in documents and webpages, but in UT2004, it scrolls SUPER FAST. I have to be real real intricate in order to switch to the right weapon. Intellipoint settings for the vertical wheel is set to slowest. I happen to be the real picky type of guy, so I know intricate when I need to, but this is toooo far.

When I run over a "better weapon", I fire off a few rounds, then switch back to the original weapon I was holding for a surprise factor. Using the Intellimouse, I usually fly all the way to a useless weapon, and end up fragged. :(
