best method to erase 2nd drive

I recently upgraded my system drive on my "main rig" from a 80gb drive to a 250gb, 16mb cache, sata drive.

I wanted my system to run off the newer, faster sata 16mb cache drive, so i ghosted the system drive onto the new one, switched the boot drives (and drive lettering) and have been running well on the new 250 for about a month.

so i'm now booting and running the system off the 250, and i've had the 80 sitting connected with all the old stuff on it for a month. i wanted to make sure everything went smoothly with the transition before i erased it. - mission accomplished -

I plan to leave the old drive in this rig, and use it as a shared drive for my network, and a general backup/storage drive.

the question is, what's the best way to clear the drive? should i just use the windows format utility (right click, format) or is there another better way to do it given my plans for it?

thanks in advance.

don't i have to unplug other drives on my pc to use those 3rd party cleaners?

how much crap is left on my drive if i just format it? i'm looking for easy. those programs may be it, i've just never used them. is it a no brainer to dban/eraser?

A quick format should do the trick, if you want more security, install "Eraser" and after the quick format then right click the drive and select "Erase unused space" :D

eraser is pretty damn easy to use. i have not used dban yet, but i dont think it would be that difficult. it will take you less than an hour to learn all the ins and outs of eraser. i'd even say 30 minutes.

format it, since you are still going to be using it, there is no need for dban or anything like that.

so just right click format the thing?

sorry, haven't done this since my dos days.

yup, right click 'Format'
or go into Disk Management, delete the partition and recreate it and then do a full format on it.

lol, my first impression was that you were going to get rid of the drive. but since you are keeping it, ya, just format it and have fun with the extra storage

yep, you got it
make sure you format it in NTFS and you can do a quick format if you want - doesn't really matter since you're going to keep using it

despite having all programs closed, i'm unable to format this. windows says that the drive is currently in use and to make sure no windows are open (there aren't) and no programs are using it (there aren't)

i shorted the slave setting on the 80g, and i've confirmed the ghost went successfully by removing the second drive and booting windows.

stumped. maybe norton is interefering?
