Hey all,

I'm thinking of going with the AMD 64 3000+ 512KB L2 Cache cpu. I'm unsure of which motherboard/ram to choose. I am definately going to go with 1 gig of ram, but do not know which motherboard/ram combo will work best with this CPU.

The system will be used for gaming, flash animation, some photoshop work, and listening to music.

Price isnt really that much of an issue, but would like to keep it to around $600...

Is the 3200+ any good? Worth the extra $25?

Thanks,

Good RAM $288.00

I'd say the extra $25 for the processor would be worth it, but that's just me. For a board, gigs seem to work good with mushkin ram, but the hot board for a64's has been the DFI-lanparty. However, I'm a corsair fan for RAM choices and the XMS series is a great stable choice.

ok, now what about ram timings?

There is this ram @ 2 2 2 5

The difference in price is $50, the difference in price between the 3000+ and the 3200+ is $25. If I get the cheaper ram, I would have more to put towards the faster processor and aftermarket heat sink. What do ya think?

In all honesty, I'd go with the low latency corsair and get the 3200+. Just save up for another week or so and get that extra $25-50 bucks you need. Also, unless you plan on overclocking, the stock HSF will cool that chip just fine. I have seen people with heat issues with the DFI board, but with my chaintech my 3000+ never goes over 44c and idles at around 32c, which gives me a bit of room to OC when i finally get the time to mess with it...and that's stock HSF and thermal pad...I have yet to put on my AS5, which will probably get me a bit lower stock temps. But, if you are going to pay that much for ram, get the xms low latency.

Someone else showed this ram to me:

PDP/Patrion 2 3 2 5

How would that compare to the Corsair? The review I saw said the crucial is only a few % faster than this stuff, and this ram is $156 for a gig vs $225 for the Corsair.

Is 2 or 3 % faster really worth $75? I think that money would be better spent getting the 3200+... right?

Is it worth it? That's all up to you I guess, since it isn't my money, heh. I don't think you'll notice any speed difference. But, I'm not sure about that other RAM as I've never used it, nor have any of my friends, so... Another thing you want to concider is stability. When I want stability, I go with corsair...do doubt. Also, there's no telling if your mobo will accept the cheap RAM.

IMHO
BH5 + DFI NF3 is still the best combo
Only if u can manage to grab a pair of BH5 :)

Get the DFI nForce3. Still not widely available yet ...but get-it.
For memory ...a Gig of Corsair XL is $275, which is overclockable with relaxed timings.

not to get off topic...

but, wtf happend to winbond anyway?

They lost a big partner, then closed their fabs and moved to speciality DRAM and flash ram crap.

benchmarks, please? If I had that rig, I'd be waving around my scores whenever/wherever possible, heh.

I've used it in a quite a few A64 builds for friends with no problems.

Most were 3000+ @ 2.5Ghz running ram in spec at 2-3-2-5 1T w/o a hitch.

Its great stuff for the price.

The PQI Turbo that does 2 2 2 5 1T for 249 is nice too.

IMHO there is no reason to pay extra for the xms over the pdp unless you really wanna run ras:cas 2 and see that 3% performance increase, especially since it costs so much more.

Here is the review where it goes head to head against xms on an a64 platform:
