Best Mac Compatible speakers $50ish range

Hmm, now theres an idea, apple make beats speakers that use a digital signal that only accept a signal from an apple device and remove all the analog and standard digital signal stuff
 
$75 is a tight budget but should push you up just far enough to get something worthy.

If you are ok with having a desktop amplifier (it's a bit ugly, if your budget was a little more that could be fixed) I would recommend this:

Micca MB42 These are great speakers for desktop use, a lot of people always recommend the MB42x's but sadly that's a bit out of your budget. However you can upgrade these to the MB42x's in the future with a $30 crossover upgrade and not have to replace the speakers.

Lepai TA2020 Pair it with one of these and that's just in your price range.

Edit: I forgot to add speaker wire since it is not included... That's just slightly above budget but I think well worth it more than other offerings!

An amp for $55 speakers, are you serious? Unless dealing with high end audio, money should be used for upgrading speakers first and foremost. Maybe if you drink snake oil all day it could be worth the psychological difference, but if his budget is that tight he'd probably be better off pocketing any savings.

I got a pair used for $60 a year or two ago for my girlfriend. She loves them, and she's not much for audiophile stuff as long as it works so that made me happy since it was a pain to watch stuff on her computer with her previous setup (at least to me -- she didn't realize how bad they were until she upgraded).

There's also these Sony SS-B3000 Bookshelf Speakers in a seller's listing. I don't have any personal experience with them, but many great reviews online from Amazon's page (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B3000-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B000OG6I6A), and exactly your price.

I also have a set of Bose Companion 2 speakers and these things sound terrible until you EQ the crap out of them to get a little treble out of them, I would not recommend them to anyone.

Those M-Audio AV40's are good, we bought a set for my father a few years ago for his PC. My brother uses the M-Audio Bx5 and I use the Alesis M1 Active MK2 on my main system, but these are $300+ speakers.

Well you _need_ an amp if your speakers are not active/powered. If you lack one, your only option is to buy one or use the speakers as flower pots. Personally I would get the JBL active monitors instead even though they cost more than 75 bucks. But I guess with a budget like that sound quality is not really the final goal - getting SOME sound is.
 
You can plug in headphones or get $5-15 speakers if your only concern is getting "SOME" sound. But the notion of buying an amp for the sole purpose of powering cheap $55 speakers just doesn't make sense to me when there are plenty other options out there that are both active and sound good.

I wouldn't consider that 10 dollar lepai an amp lol. But I agree.
 
with this budget thriftstores / garage sales / estate sales might be your friend


right now i am listening to a $32~ish stereo set up ... (you would need a bit of room for this however) anyways $20 Kenwood KR-V106R receiver and $11.25 Monitor Audio Silver S1 speakers. I found the Kenwood at a Catholic hospice thrift store and the speakers at Goodwill .. the finish looked awful when I got them..but I cleaned them up



the MA speakers are the larger wood grain bookshelf speakers on end also in picture some NHT superzero speakers I bought off another forum $50 and some tiny little Optimus Pro-X5 speakers ($10) and Realistic Minimus 77's ($10) so with some looking you could probably find some stuff... if a receiver or full sized amp wouldn't fit the aforementioned lepai amp is tiny and cheap.. my own small t-amp is in this pic also under FiiO E09K is a SMSL SA-S3 which cost $60 shipped with 4A power supply.
 
Thrift stores are your friend if you want a pretty nice and inexpensive setup.

My last big score was a powered subwoofer and some monitor speakers for a whopping $30. The sub, although old, still went for around $200 when I picked it up.

I often see pretty decent speakers and receivers at thrift stores for pretty cheap. You could definitely get a pretty nice setup for $75.

As for the speakers I use for my computer, I have a pretty old Creative 5.1 setup that I have had for at least 10 years.

Yes I am serious. I've heard the AV-40s and the Micca MB42... I definitely prefer the sound of the Micca's over the AV-40. Also, buying the AV-40 new would cost more than the budget would allow.

I have not however heard the JBL active monitors so I cannot make any remarks on that set. The Micca's offer outstanding value, I would recommend going to youtube and looking up videos on the set because they really offer a lot for a low price, they also do not take up too much desk space and sound very good.

I love the youtube videos where they play music and expect people to hear how great they sound lol.
