what's the best lcd for text? just browsing and office stuff mainly. super sharp text, very easy on the eyes display, preferably widescreen. do they make such beasts?

they all are good for text... gaming/video is a different matter ;) As for widescreen, u'll have to search for that one ;) I am aware of only wide 20"+ screens, dunno if they make'm smaller :D Try 2005fpw, it's dirt cheap :p

I'm using a 23" ACD as I type this post. Just bought it yesterday and was very disappointed with the text quality until a few minutes ago. Forgot to change the resolution - I'm a dummy. Text quality is now excellent.

This monitor is probably overpriced, but it's pretty nice. Another nice one (and MUCH less expensive) is the Samsung 173P, though not wide screen.

Don't know if either of these is best, but they're both very good. You didn't specify price or size preferences in you post. Perhaps you'll get more accurate answers if you elaborate a bit more.

Incidentally, the 173P also has very crisp graphics, but at 25ms is not fast enough for gamers.

Most LCDs will be better for text than any CRT. Make sure it has DVI though, it makes a big difference in text crispness.

20" iMac screen at work. Everyone who stops at my cube drools over the panel (note to self: get Windex wipes). I gave up a dual-processor G5 for the display. :D

Do you compulsively slap away all the dirty hands reaching for it? :D

I swear some of my co-workers are so dopey sometimes. Had a stupefied co-worker grab and lift my laptop by its screen once. He was reacting to some funny video or something, needless to say if looks could've killed that day...

Sry for veering off topic

but in lowlight non office conditions i haven't seen any lcd that isn't overly bright and no true blacks. that disturbs me. and widescreen.

I just change the brightness on my display (on the iMac). I assume that Windows has a brightness control as well...
