Best Intel Processor

[Enthusiast Extreme]

Thinking of doing a build here shortly. I am coming from a I7 990x. I think the best one out right now is 4960x? The question I had was what's the step down below that? 3930?

I will be coupling that with a Gtx 780

Thanks guys

The answer usually depends on what you are doing with your PC? If you really need 12 threads, if you are using more than 1 GPU.

Also I assume this is a second machine since you list a lga2011 system in your sig.

Yes 2nd machine sir. Intense gaming and maybe folding.

3970x would be the step down from 4960x. 3970x from what I read draws more power too.
Just get the 4960x and call it a day.

I would consider the 4930K for this. Although that would also depend on how much you are overclocking your 990X? I mean if you are not overclocking and do not plan to overclock the 4930K would likely be a step down from the 990X.

Edit: anandtech says it will not be a step down (no 4930 so I had to use the 3930) in the case of not overclocking :http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/444?vs=552

If more cores = better you might as well go Intel Xeon E5-2687W v2

I am just mad that intel keeps milking the enthusiast platform without releasing an 8 core extreme processor...

You will have to wait till next year for that..

As long as AMD does not have any CPU that could perform as well as an 8 core intel processor why would Intel need one?
