Can anybody give me a list of the top 10 intel processors?
What would be very useful would also be their amd counterparts. I'm trying to decide which processor I'm going to buy :)

Thanks.

e6300 if you are on a budget. $187 for some of the best performance can not be beaten with current cpus. Any of the C2D's will do fine if you have the extra cash. The e4300 is also pretty good but I think its around the price of a 6300. Kentsfield is good if you have $1000 to spend on a quad core.

I tend to like the E6600 the most myself. For the price, it is hands down the best bang for the buck processor. It is also the hottest Conroe cpu selling atm. It's what I'm basing my current build on. I did have the money to go with the the Core 2 Duo extreme, but I played it smart since that proc is damn near $700 more & would probally only benefit those performance wise that went the water cooling route. I'm just gonna slap a top quality HSF combo, get some good ram & OC the fuck out of it lol. Test for stability & temps & I'm set. Will end up out performing a Stock core 2 extreme at a third of the cost. Same four meg cache as well.

e6400, for most of the same reasons you mentioned- just disagree on the specific proc. It looks like the 2MB chips overclock a teensy bit better on average than the e66.

Top 10 in terms of fun and overclocking:
1) QX6700
2) e6400
3) e6600
4) Q6600
5) e6700
6) Um... 805/915/920?
I can't recommend the e4300 yet, because there are a lot of BIOS limitations on this chip so far. I also can't justify an X6800 for any spot in the top 10 because spending so much on a dual-core is a joke when the Quad-Extreme is around the same price.

For the best bargain in the used circuits, you could also look at the Pentium-D 805 and 915/920- they can both be had for under $100 used. While they will be outperformed by the Core 2 line, they overclock nicely and are still respectable chips.

Thanks for the replies folks. What would ya's say are intel's response to the following AMD processors:

5600+ x2
6000+ x2

I know the 6000+ isn't released yet but apparently it's going to be 3ghz with 2mb L2 cache.
I need my pc to be ready for future games and appz but don't really want to spend £560 on the processor alone...so I think quad core and the fx-72 are out of the question.

Thanks in advance.

I could have sworn that newegg had the 6000+ a few days ago on their website, but now its off.

I personally like the 6600. I've had the chance to overclock two now. My own which runs 3.3ghz daily on 1.35 vcore and a friends that does 3.6 on 1.45. Very good processors.
