Morning,

This is your Captain speaking..... I'm torn between the Pentium 4 2.6 GHz and the 3.0 GHz. Which one would be best for "stable" overclocks. I'll be setting up the following system: MSI Neo-2 PFS motherboard, Corsair TwinX512 4000PT (DDR500), WD 180 SE, Chaintech FX5700 Ultra Apogee AA5700U and Windows 2000 Pro.

The CPU will be cooled by a Zalman CNPS7000-ALCU, with AS5.

Thanks.

Hey,

I've decided to go with a Pentium 4 2.8GHz (SL6WJ) D1 Stepping. I've looked at many a forum and most have said that the processor is one of the "best" at overclocking! Thanks for everyone's help.

Captain Harlock.

go xp pro, better os(IMO) i have the 3.0 very stable on air at 3.5(my highest oc yet) plan to go higher, under loads at 3.5 i was only hitting like 48- 50c tops very stable at 3.5 no problems have tested the 2.8 so can't really say anything bad with that, but i think you will be able to get more juice outta the 3.0

I currently use XP and have since the release. In my opinion, XP Pro is a piece of Sh*t. It’s not very stable!! I'm using 2000 Pro at work and have never, ever had a lock-up. Most games run very well. I might go with “Longhorn” when it comes out in 2006. Providing it’s not built on the XP platform. I can only hope.

Go ahead and make one better jackass.

Windows XP isn't bad. It's basically Windows 2k, more capabilities, and more colorful. It also works the best with Intels HyperThreading technology.

2.6c will get you the best

if you have problems in XP, you probabily did something dumb.

i have no complaints of windows xp except that its a resource sucking giant, and theres lots of unneccessary crap installed.

Never had a problem with XP Pro, and I use a fair amount of 2000 aswell. I prefer XP over 2000 any day of the week. But it's all based on personnal preference.

With that said. The 2.4C's (a good chip, not a cheap chip) are good overclockers for the cost.

Think of it this way. With 3.0ghz, you'll be able to obtain 3.4/3.5 and (depending your ram) keep a 1:1 memory ratio. But if you can get a 2.4C/2.6C to 3.4/3.5, it'll probably blow the 3.0@3.4/3.5 away because it has a giant FSB when compared.

I got a 2.6c OC'd to 3.12ghz right now, and I could probably take it higher I just dont feel like pushing the limits. Still using standard intel cooling, if I upgrade Ill tell you how I can get it. Windows XP is nice, 2000 is more of a business freindly I find, but if you wanna play games, goto XP. And whoever was talking about Longhorn, they started to built it on the XP technology, which used NT technology, and they seem to be making some changes that don't relate to XP before, so we will have to see later when they have a better beta out if its any good.

My rec, go with the 2.6c

Well you can just as easily disable the unwated services.

the 3.0c will get to higher clock speeds, but the 2.6c will get a better overclock

for example a 3.0c should easily run at 3.5ghz on air for a 500mhz overclock. the 2.6c will hit 3.2ghz(ish) on air for a 600mhz overclock.

i say go with the 2.6c just because its cheaper.
