something in the Matrox line maybe, but don't expect to be having the best gaming experience

In gameing ATI has slightly better IQ the nVidia.

well there are cards out there with better 2D quality, for high-end situations where fast RAMDACS and the like are needed with top rate filters, there is a market outside of 3D acceleration
The Matrox Parhelia is very good, image quality-wise...
Supports 30 bit colour, has advanced AA, up to 16x... downside is that its shaders are extremely limited (vs2.0 and ps1.3), so in 3d its shading won't be of very high quality.
I don't know why you want to exclude ATi though... Their image quality is also excellent. Their AA is very good, and they do have decent shaders.
In fact, a friend of mine owns a photography studio, and they use ATi cards in all their image processing systems (mostly Macs). She says that Kodak recommends ATi.
