best home server setup?

im going to be building a server for my home LAN. ill use it for holding certain files, hosting game servers, a secondary computer for gaming in case a friend comes over and doesnt have a computer, and any other server related tasks. ill be putting no more than $1200 into this computer(including monitor and speakers). thnx for any help and ideas. :D
 
You'll want as much storage space as possible for the server.

Don't spend more than $15 on a graphics card for it as well.

Get a good 3Com or Intel NIC and you should be set.

Don't get an insane amount of RAM if 85% of it will be unused. Same goes for processor.
