What is generally agreed to be the best heatsink for socket 939? Just wondering, because most of the reviews Ive seen of massive heat sinks only reduce temperatures by 1 or 2 defgrees.
 
i second the xp-90 and 120. if you have the space definately look into teh 120.

my friend just bought a thermalright as5, i think it was called. we had his Athlon XP 2200+ mobile running from stock 1.6GHz to 2.52GHz. thermalright is definately the right place to get your heatsinks from.
 
ok let me tell you something .. I have my XP-120 installed right now on my 2.8C ... My computer is o/c from 2.8 - 3.3 at 1:1 ratio and my idle temps have not even increased not 1 bit ... and it goes from 48C - 61C on load, ofcourse I don't really think these temps are accurate since my idle temps on my intel board was 33C before I switched to Abit

So you can see that the temp. 61C-15C(increase of temp on Abit) is around 46 - 50 or something of that sort so the heatsink does it's job WELL
 
Thanks for the feedback :) I will look into it. Space isnt really a problem, its just that I dont like huge heatsinks, the look pretty ugly :p
EDIT: Does it matter that the XP120s,and 90s are made out of aluminium.... copper would have seemed the obvious choice to me...
 
first of all Aluminum is lighter and it the bas is Copper i believe where it counts.

2nd these heatsinks are the best heatsinks money can buy, they are light so you can move your computer without worrying about something breaking in there ..

Check out the XP-120 in real life ...

He is right, the base is copper and it has been nickel plated.

While I don't have the XP120, I do have the socket A SI-97, and I can attest to the SI-97 doing a great job while making very little noise.

You can't go wrong with Thermalright. (not Thermaltake....Thermalright, if you go Thermaltake, make sure you take a closer look before you buy)
 
ROFL it was your case that made me decide I didnt like big heatsinks :) sorry bout that, I think I will go witht he XP-90
 
With a very low-speed Antec 120mm fan on my XP-90, my 3500+ tops out at 40C under load in near-silence. With a faster fan I'm in the mid-30s under load. Pretty sweet.

If you want a smaller heatsink, get one of the Zalman 7000B AlCu heatsink/fan combos.

im quite freakin aware that AS5 is a thermal compound. i said 'i think it was called as5,' meaning i wasnt sure whether it was called AS5 or not. i have no idea wat it was, except that it was 3 digits, 'a' at the beginning, and 5 at the end.

stupid kids.... just because one product is called AS5, doesnt mean that there isnt another product out on the market called AS5.

Well, I posted a bloody picture of just that thing, now didn't I? ;)

92mm or 120mm fans both fit, the 120mm overhangs around the edges but it works fine.
 
Do the included clips hold a 120? Wait...yes they do! My SI-97 came with both! Sorry, forgot about that.... :(

Off to put my 120 on my SI-97! :D

will it fit a 120mm thats 38mm thick vs 25mm thick?
 
Just out of curiosity, does anyone have an XP90 w/a 90mm fan on an IC7-Max3? A specific request yes, but this is the [H] after all. :D
 
I've just put a xp-120 with a 1300rpm (that's it's max speed!) 18db Papst fan onto my 3800+ and I'm very pleased with the near total lack of noise.

2 hours of p95 torture got it to 48degrees, which I'm quite impressed with.

Seriously huge though (but light) even before the fan goes on, I had one scary moment when I thought it wasn't going to fit because of the row of caps next to the socket on my a8v, but just putting the pipes on the other side sorted that, and I'm glad I already had a 1gb stick in the closest slot (the heatpipes overhang it slightly), but other than that it fits fine.

I'm two problems away from a high performance system (3800+, 6800u@430/1200) that makes nearly no noise, namely:

The sound of air moving, I'm going to cut out the stamped fan grills on the case (antec 3700bqe) to see if that helps any.

An oscillating 80mm fan in my PSU that causes vibrational noise, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to open the PSU, so I may just swap it for a new one, the OCZ Powerstream 520 looks nice (and with enough overhead to last for a while).

If your current PSU noise bothers you, I wouldn't go near the OCZ. Looks cool, but it's not silent. Check out the new Seasonic S12 -- available from 360w to 600w. Rock solid and the quietest brand available (unless you're brave enough for fanless).

If you do decide on a fan swap, go for Panaflo L1A or M1A for more flow.. if you don't need much air, Nexus makes the quietest available. Pabst isn't bad though!
 
Castle Bravo, that is a really styish computer you have! Is that just a clear fan that's on the heatsink? What kind is it?

Don't think the thickness really matters, the fan is just held on with these wire clip things that catch the bottom edge of the fan. Worst case, you probably just bend the wire clips some.

The fan on my XP-90 is actually just a leftover low-speed Antec 120mm case fan I had lying around. If I was doing it from scratch I'd probalby get one of their 3-speed models.

Side note, the 92mm Panaflos aren't that quiet, they have a kind of high-pitched buzzy sound to them.

Actually I wouldn't fool with the fan grills, I dont' think they are the problem. If you want a REALLY quiet PSU, I'd get either an Antec Neopower 480 (uses a huge-n-slow 120mm fan) or even an Antec Phantom 350, which is totally fanless. Normally, I'd suggest more wattage for a 6800 Ultra than the Phantom, but it is ATX 2.0 with dual 12v rails that total 34 amps.

Impressive indeed!

I am interested in these Papst...are they available most anywhere, and how do they compare to the Panaflos? I will google this, but I was just wanting your input as well.

I had some trouble finding Papst resellers (english speaking ones anyway), I have no idea how readily availiable they are in the US.
I only know panaflo by reputation but my understanding is that the quality of both companies stuff is pretty similar.

Thanks, I'm not really that worried about the system being totally quiet (though I did briefly consider getting a Stacker and putting two fanless PSUs in it...), but I find the vibrational noise of that one fan quite irritating, and I'm not thrilled with the PSU anyway.

On topic again...

I was quite suprised by how much quieter the xp-120/papst is compared to the zalman 7000cu it replaced, while still getting slightly lower temps. I'd easily imagine that with a serious fan the xp-120 could probably induce another ice-age
 
I agree with the XP-120...What are the best fans to pair up with the X-120...
 
i'm concerned neither will fit my MSI K8N Neo FSR

the cpu is located maybe 2 inches above my 6800GT. instead of putting the memory sticks to the right, and highering the cpu location, MSI put the memory sticks on top lying horizontally, pushing down the cpu.

will a XP-90 fit? anyone here have a MSI mobo?

i want one so i can overclock (hopefully) my 3200+ Socket 939 to 2.6....
 
how does the cooling on the xp-90,120 compare to the cnps7000b/7700? Is it worth the extra $20 or so?
