Best HDD Diagnostic Test Software?

Hi there,
I was wondering what would be the best diagnostic program? My HDD is running kind of slow, it used to transfer data at 1.3gbps now it runs around 600mbps. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
 
I'm generally interested in diagnostic and testing programs (Linux) for SSDs, HDDs, memory, CPUs, etc. If anybody has any suggestions, I'm also very interested to know. Thanks!!

For hard drives I use the 4 pass badblocks read / write test (data destructive) on every disk I get at home and at work (several hundred now). Before during and after the test I check the SMART raw values for 5 or so key smart attributes.

For SSDs I do nothing. I am not sure there is any good testing method.
