Hi Im currently using Diskeeper 9 to defragment my drive but i have heard many good things about PerfectDisk 7 and I was wondering what u guys think.

If u use any other tool and are happy with it, please say so.. Im looking for the best of the best for my computer so any suggestions to which are best would be helpful. thank you
 
I went from Diskeeper 7 to 9, then to O&O Defrag 8 and will never come back to dk :D

so far 0&0 is on my list too.. still have to read more about its features and how good it is. Diskeeper seems to me like a mainstream tool.. while PerfectDisk and 0&0 are 'underdogs'
kinda like norton vs. nod32 i guess... (in this case nortons mainstream but sucks compared to nod32)

is it a good idea to have 2 defrag tools installed in ur computer at the same time? I.e having DK and PerfectDisk.. but running DK occasionally and running PD most of the time?
 
I'm an O&O fan from using it in the past, but i'm not willing to pay much for software :(
 
ive been using diskeeper, but am starting to look at something new. Because once i turn it off, it still runs in the bg and uses like hella ram.
think ill check out that O&O 8
 
Im trying out PerfectDisk. so far so good. definitely better than Diskeeper mainly because it has the ability to actually move the fragments so there are no 'white' spaces in between. (all the free spaces are moved to the end of the drive) only thing it seems to be missing is a FragShield. I found diskeeper's FragShield feature to be quite useful, but I prefer PerfectDisk overall..

also it doesnt use any background services like DKservice.exe or some DKIcon crap..

my system starts up with 22processes now.. woot!
 
Another vote for O&O. Been using it for a long time and like it much better than others I've used.
 
how come no one mentioned the windows defrag tool?!?! lol

but seriously what am I missing out on by using the standard ole MS defrag?

lol yeah why pay for something if it comes with windows for free.
 
Doesn't anyone else ever use DIRMS? It's free, runs from a command line and is fast. I've been using it on most of my machines for the past coupla years, although I'm currently giving Perfect Disk a trial. Much prettier... but not free.
 
I personally have never had any problems with plain ol ms defrag. Everything gets pushed to the inside of the drive everytime I run it. Guess I dont see the point.
 
yeah I'd like a little better explanation then just "better job" if anyone has the time later. If I am missing out on something I'll switch without hesitation but if its just some like anti MS or "l33t" thing I can live without it.
 
From my experience, third party defragger's are faster and have more detailed information.
 
PerfectDisk, w/SmartPlacement or whatever, places files for fastest access based on usage stats.
 
sure for some ppl the MS disk defrag tool is fine. actually that tool is made my diskeeper. but thats the uber basic version of the actual pay-for diskeeper...

to some who dont see the point, well lets jus say its somethin like... buying a new video card to replace ur onboard video ;)

did anyone not say basically "just cuase..."?
 
I know windows wont move the pagefile, that's the number 1 selling point on a 3rd party defragger for me.
 
I just started using O&O after many years with Norton. I am very happy with it. The multiple defrag styles is very nice.
 
I know some of these have been mentioned but I thought I'd do a little compilation.
With a 3rd party defragger you get:
-Much faster defrag times
-Pagefile
-More tools like schedulers
-Different defrag methods (for different applications like servers or large storage)
-Can run in background so you can still use the files that are being defragged without messing it up
-Improved interface
-Very detailed information
-And depending on which one you choose there are other features like DK's FragShield and PerfectDisk's SMARTPlacement

DK is about $30 and O&O and PerfectDisk are both like $45. I'm sure you can find a deal somewhere but if you can't and you're perfectly content with Window's defragger, then it is probably a waste of money for you and you should stick with what you got.

well if you rebooted you would :p
clearing the pagefile at shutdown is a common security tweak
of course with the high amount of memory now employed on a gaming rig, its generally considered a pain in the butt most would rather skip


its the registry, Master File Table and its mirrors that are the real pain
in other words the other "exclusively locked" files Windows cant defrag that third party aps are so handy for


in the freeware solution category
Sysinternal's PageDefrag

but as mentioned I love O&O for the different kinds of defrag I can use it for, to optimize a given partition to the data type on it
(by access, by name, ect)
 
How exactly do you move the pagefile with O&O 8.0? I tried all the Complete/xxx methods, i tried the boottime defrag setting and its still sitting in the middle of my HD. Anyone have any pointers on how to move it?
 
You can still find the O&O Defrag 2000 Light out there. It's certainly an older version, but it was published as freeware. There's no scheduling or any of the advanced features of the current O&O, but its still compatible with XP and the price is right!
