Well I've been studing up for my new build and I'm looking to get an HDD. I'm not sure what brand I should get because everyone I hear from or every customer review I read always has a story of how one brand always fails on them and should never be trusted. Some say it's Western Digital, Maxtor, or Seagate. So is a hard drive a hard drive or is there some good brands?
 
There is no "best" brand out there. It's all based on oppinions and sometimes luck. Now there is occasionally a fualty model (Deathstars anyone?).


Stick with something that has a good warranty, if it breaks down the line... just get it replaced for free.
 
As Ockie pointed out, there is no "bad brand," although there have been some models that have had documented reliability/quality control issues. The IBM DeskStar 60GXP and Maxtor DiamondMax8 are the best examples from recent memory. With competition and margins as tight as they are in the consumer hard drive market, all of the makers know that any drive that proves to have a design defect or quality control issue will be a disaster for the maker, witness the fate of IBM's HDD division after the DeskStar 60GXP disaster.

Your choice of fans, case, and power supply are more likely to influence the reliability of your hard drive than the choice of which brand of hard drive.
