Best Hard Drive Brand?

I was going to get a new hard drive, whats the best brand, it seems all major brands, Seagate, Maxtor, and Western Digital have their own perks. Each is 7200RPM, 8MB cache. The seagate has 5 year warranty, the maxtor has Fluid Drive bearings and is ATA-133(any difference between ATA-100 and ATA-133, i was going to get some rounded cables and would ATA-133 cables work with ATA-100?), and Western Digital is kind of the most reliable brand it seems like. Thanks
 
No real difference between ATA133 and 100, infact most motherboard controllers are only ATA100 anyways. Performance wise it doesnt really do anything.

FWIW, I like seagate, though there do seem to be problems with their rebates (I've seen numerous complaints about Seagate HDs and Fry's/Outpost rebates).
 
i like seagate, but have more wds lol

the 5 year warranty on seagates make them aiight.. .they are quiet too
 
I've used a lot of WD drives with little problem, and Seagate have a very good reputation.

Personal and professional experience would lead me to say: Anything but Maxtor.
 
To the original poster,

harddrives, like amd vs intel, nvidia vs ati, are a very flame war starting topic. Best bet is to research what companies offer and read forums to pick up on failure patterns.
 
my personal preference is Maxtor, they're excellent when it comes to support. But anymore all companies seem to be pretty good about that.

I have more WD drives in my systems now, because of price and rebates lately but those new 16mb cache drives from maxtor are looking really good.

Storagereview.com is a good place to look to get an idea of the realiability of the various brands. Other than a handful of outliers that are really good or really poor, in general, all the drives are similar in terms of reliability.

You'll get plenty of people saying that one brand is better than another, and vice versa. Personally for me, WD has been a death fest and I feel unlucky about buying another WD. But statistically, it really doesn't matter.
 
As long as you stick to Seagate or Western Digital, you'll be fine.
