I've got an old functional Socket 939 MSI board with a Athlon 64 3000(single core), 1 GB RAM, and a crappy 400 watt power supply that I want to put a folding GPU into(currently it has a 7800 GTX in it). I was thinking something like a GT 240 or 9600 GSO would be best.

What do you guys think? Will the Athlon 3000 even be enough to keep up with the GPU client. Do I dare put anything bigger than a GT 240 in it?

I'm looking into this because I can't fold right now on anything other than the i7 in my sig box...dang GPU3 can't come soon enough.
 
The NV folding client doesn't need much CPU to push it. If you have a 6 pin PCI-E connector you could easily push a 9800GT with that PSU.
 
We all know the answe to this is the Fermi 480... Right guys? :D

Go with a 260, I think you can handle it.
 
Fermi can't fold yet so get a GTX 295 if you need it right now. They're about $350 in the BST forum. Otherwise I think Fermi should be folding within a month.

gt240, 9600gso 384mb, 8800gt, 9800gt, gts250, gtx260 are all good and should fit within 400W drawn from the wall. Even a GT 220 will get you 2K ppd.
 
my suggestion is either a used 8800GT and overclock the shit out of the shaders or a GTS 250.. can find both pretty cheap and they both fold fine..

GTX275 fold quite well.
 
What crappy 400W PSU? If it's a really shit PSU then it doesn't matter if 400W is enough for a decent GPU since the PSU won't be able to provide that much power anyway.
 
For now I've just put a GT 240 in it(no 6 pin PCIE cord). If I get the funds to upgrade the PSU then yeah, I should be good to put a 260/275 in it going forward I think. Thanks for the input guys.
