Best GPU for F@H?

G'day all. 'til Recently, I had been running a venerable R580 in my rig - which for a brief time I was using run GPU F@H. I enjoyed being able to turn in massive point/WU counts. When we moved to GPU2, obviously, I lost my ability to run the GPU client; and while my trusty old Toledo Athlon 64 X2 was a solid CPU it paled in comparison to the GPU client (that and I was too lazy to setup the SMP client).

Cue upgrade build this December, when I installed a Lynnfield i5 750 (currently running at 3.38Ghz) and more importantly a G92b GTS 250 1GB.

I promptly downloaded the GPU2 client, and have been happily folding ever since.

The 250 is a stopgap purchase until all the noise in the GPU market shakes out (specifically - until Fermi drops and possibly ATI starts revealing details about RV970).

I've read a lot about the OpenCL problems (both in Nvidia and ATI's implementations). My question is, if it comes down to buying a high-powered current-gen GPU - what is the best GPU (line or model) for F@H?

For reference, I'd like to significantly increase my current production - which is at around 3-4k points per day.
 
best dollar per points is the gtx260 running my card overclocked to 700/1560/1100 i average about 8500-8700 a day 1000ppd less for a stock card
 
A used 216 shader GTX260 is the best bang for the buck right now.
 
Right now the 216-260 is the deal, but I think after the Fermi drop and ATI's counter attack you'll see a bunch of 275's hit the market, and if the price is right I'd have to pick that as the best card from the GT200 series, and if the gap is close enough Id say get that. Pair that with your 250 in the samerig and you could hit 15k on a good day, and you'd have a formidable Physx gaming rig too

Just done some maths for any of us in the UK

a 260 216 gives 48.4ppd/£ based on 7.5kPPD
a EVGA 275/250 COOP gives 49.3ppd/£ based on 13.8k PPD

These are at stock clocks

Wasn't really talking about the co op because he already has the 250, so price would be lower, but the numbers can be used as a rough estimate for ppd atleast

I see your point but unless you can find a 295 anywhere this is the next best thing, having a 275 and 250 on the same board is folding goodness:)
It may be that i used co-op when i shouldn't have, my board is the one with the 250 Physix co processor on it, maybe hyrid or even dual GPU might be a better description

You save money by going with stuff under a 260 but honestly I wouldn't bother.
If you really want to gpu fold, a 260 or GX2 would be my minimum...everything else isn't worth putting the money into because the $:pPD ratio is not worth it.

Doubt it. Somehow. Even if everybody who'd ever bought a GT200 card decided to sell theirs, I'm pretty sure there would still be a massive shortage.

As old as they are, all the REAL 200 cards (260, 275, 280, 285, 295) are still fetching their price premiums and haven't dropped much unless you get one used or get a coupon or something like that.

I remember a few months ago people railed me for posting a deal from Dell for a 260 216 stock clocks for $154 in the Hot Deals forum, saying that was "high" and "not a deal". Funny how today the only way you can get a 260 is either to get lucky at B&M MC for $151 or find a coupon code somewhere, unless you get one used....and most people still list theirs around $140-$150 even used. (for a 260 216)

nVidia's already hemorrhaging severely due to the ATi lashing, so they're trying to make money where they can....all these cards still cost more than they should since they've fallen so far down the charts. Sad thing is, ATi cards still fold like crap, so anyone folding is stuck paying nV premiums...it's BS, but what can you do? That's why I've started moving away from gpu systems and built a 2nd i7....in the long run, it's cheaper. Less power, less heat...more PPD for the cost. :)
 
FWIW Used 8800GTs can be had for $50 in the FS/FT forum and can get 5-6k PPD. That to me is the best bang for the buck in folding.

you must be getting the good WU's then cuz my 260 216 clocked pretty much identical to yours is getting around 4k ppd. When i first got it, the first few WU's had me @ 8k, but i've been around 4-5k for a while now :mad:

Download GPUz and post the readout for us.... me thinks your stuck in 2d.
 
4k seems too high for 2D, but you may have been Auto Downclocked, I've had that happen a few time on my 295's
Either way, do what he said, start a thread, we'll square you away!

Then again, I do get about once or twice a day a WU that drops me down to 4k even on a 295, all in the 1010X family of units
