Greetings all,

I've seen a few similar posts, but felt I really couldn't find an answer for what I'm looking for. I would like to purchase a good to very good headphone or headset for my gaming rig, but have been out of the audio loop for some time.

Can anyone recommend the top headphones and headsets available? I've tried to find some good gaming headsets, but there really don't seem to be any good ones out there. I'm wondering if I should purchase a good set of headphones and buy a separate USB mic or something.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Good headphones - YES
Just get a clip on or desktop mic for like $10 (zalman makes one)

If you are willing to spend around $100, I highly recommend the Audio Technica a500s for headphones. They're closed, comfortable, and sound great for the price (and don't require an amp to sound their best). I've recommended them to a bunch of friends so far and none of them have been disappointed.

Thanks for the reply.

Any idea if this is a good mic? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836111601

I'm willing to spend up to $150.00 for both. How are the Audio Technica a700s compared to the a 500s? Is there much of a difference?

There are so many threads about this, I didn't see the need for another. Just a quick question:

Is there a big difference between Audio Technica A700 and the Steelpad Steel Sound 5H v 2.0. I'm not a huge Audiophile, just want my games to sound good. I've been using some cheapo headset with my Xfi ExtremeGamer, so either one of those will be a big jump. I am leaning towards Steelpad Steel Sound 5H v 2.0 just because it's more convenient with it having good quality mic already. But if you say there will be a big difference, I'll be swayed towards the A700.

And if I do go A700, is open vs closed just a preference, or is their a sound difference. I use the headset in a relatively quiet room.

Edit: I am also right in saying Steelpad Steel Sound 5H v 2.0 is the best headset on the market right?

LOL

Any gaming headset sucks donkey balls sound wise. Don't listen to me and buy the steel. If you don't know any different it is a big improvement. IF you want a good headset go to Koss's website and check out their $40 version. It is a quality built headphone with a good mic.

That is the model I am talking about.

You can get some ATH-AD700 for 107-109 off amazon.com. those what I have. I love them so far. You can get something like mine and add a clip on mic to the cord and use it that way.

I had a pair of Razers which I did enjoy them ,But the rear drivers not having bass got annoying so I sold them along with the sound card.

I been using my onboard with Virtal surround sound enhancement with my ATH-AD700 for a week now. And I do here my surrounding much better with the ATH-AD 700 then I did with my razers I had. because of the bigger sound stage the ATH-AD700's.

So you better off buying some ATH-AD700 and using CMS3D- headphone mode or dobly headphone mode. So you will have both Surround and Sound quailty instead of just surround.

The only reason why they marketed them as gaming headphones because they come with a mic attached. you can get the standalone Zalman mic for like 7 bucks from crazy PC and attach it to the headphones.

koss headphones sound pretty good. in middle school when we had to take this gay thing called C.A.I. we had to sit on the pcs with those on and do like math problems and reading problems. But id just unplug the headphones from the back of pc and use my ipod. sounded pretty good if u asked me.

for headsets i think the steelsounds are great- very comfy- deep cushions, braided lines, cable mic. VERY nice highs and mids, not so great bass. good for hearing 'gunfire' and voices. definately made for multiplayer gaming.
however they do not compare to the same price range headphones (70.00). senn hd485's blow these away sound wise!
i have several senns, a koss, a grado, and some others. when i play online with teamspeak i almost always use the steelsounds. no teamspeak i use nice brand headphones so its a matter of preference

I purchased some ATH-A700 from Audiocubes for £70 and I love them!!! They sound so nice and are closed, meaning no sound leakage. Usually with closed headphones, you can hear a slight echo but with these... nope, sounds great. The A700's sound approx 10% better than the A500's and the price differences isn't that much. There is also the A900 model but it is extremely hard to tell the difference between these and the A700, so it's not worth the extra money.

Audiocubes is an american website but they have unbeatable prices and cheap worldwide shipping costs. They also value the package low cost, to avoid custom charges when it reaches the UK.

Thanks for the replies all. My apologies for asking an already asked question ;).

I agree a sticky would be excellent!
