I've been tasked with ordering a camera for my business (an emergency animal clinic). $300 range or so.

The dealbreaker is that it's going to need to be sturdy, easy to use, and have decent image quality. It would be used for taking closeups (of animals) more than not, so a nice macro would be ideal.

Right off the bat I'm thinking Canon A series, Sony Cybershot or a Nikon. Can someone help me to narrow down my choices?
 
canon powershot sd300-400. check dell.com, they keep having amazing deals on those. just ordered a canon sd400 5mp + 256mb tonight for 327 shipped + tax (grrr). the sd300 4mp should be going for 267 without tax and SD card.
 
You will probably want a camera with the flash as far away from the lens as possible (if you plan to use the flash often). That will reduce red-eye a lot, and should produce better looking images. That said, most of the cameras you will be looking at have the flash in the same spot :(

Consider having a lot of light for pictures. More light = better pictures. Flash can help produce more light, but it casts harsh shadows if it is the only strong light.

Maybe Nikon would be more useful than Canon here. I haven't seen images from it, but I know someone who has one and enjoys it. You may consider checking out the Coolpix 5900 (just under $300) -- http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_cp5900.asp
