Best External HDD?

but a good internal HDD (look in the [H]ardDeals section for some really inexpensive PATA HDDs)

then buy a good enclosure. look for some good ones at the egg.

There are bad ones at NewEgg too, so how do you propose he differentiate between the two?

first find ones that catch his eye, then read customer reviews and ratings... ;)

If the enclosure is passively cooled it should be aluminum, if it is actively cooled just look for one that looks good. If you are going to keep it in a place that gets some good airflow then i'd just go for a passively cooled enclosure,... more fans=more noise and thats a negative for me.

i use a passive one, and its pretty nice, because it is quiet. only the quiet hum of my beautiful mass storage device...

between that, and it cuts down on size. also a major plus. and there no moving parts (aside from the drive itself, which is pretty well protected w/in the enclosure), which is also a great plus, esp when you travel w/ it.
