Best External HDD for file sharing?

Hello all, I'm new to this, but what I want to do is connect an external HDD to my Asus RT-N66U router, and be able to store movies and music and stream them from pc's in my network throughout the house. What is the best route to go with this as far as brand and type of HDD? I'm thinking I want at least 3tb of storage. I also am not sure if a NAS would work for this? I'm not familiar with that type of HDD.

Well you can buy 1 enterprise grade harddrive for a lot of money and hope the increased quality will hold true. Or you can buy a USB enclosure that does RAID 1 mirroring and buy 2 consumer grade drives and feel mostly protected.

Or you can buy 1 consumer grade drive and have it last for years and years.

Its all a gamble and no one can guess it. However for the duty of router storage drive I would go with the lower speed drives (not 7200 RPM) just because you won't need the fast access speeds and those big drives can move plenty of data. Even the "slow" 3TB drives can still push over 100MB/s.
