Best drives for raid 0?

I'm thinking about replacing my 2tb caviar blacks for something that might perform better at writes in raid 0.
Specifically for video editing
any suggestions?

Well, what kind of capacity do you need, and what's your price range?

Any SSD will perform better at writes in RAID0 compared to even a "fast" mechanical hard drive. But SSDs don't really have the capacity needed for video editing. Consumer SSDs more or less max out at 500GB-600GB, so if you ran two of them in RAID0, you'd get maybe 1TB at best. This wouldn't be cheap, either.

You might actually end up doing better getting an SSD to use as a catch drive and keeping the Caviar Blacks. If you have a Z68 or Z77 chipset, you can use this:

With a smaller SSD, and it provides a large speed boost. If you really want to replace the Caviar Blacks with something that has more comparable storage capacity, this is the best you can do:

It's a lot slower than any SSD, but it's still a bit faster than what you have. I wouldn't go for it, though, I'd try the smaller SSD and Intel SRT approach first.

well i was going to keep my m4 for my boot drive and use the blacks in raid unless bringing another ssd as a cache drive would be a good idea even though it would be constantly writing?

It would improve write performance by quite a bit, and it would only take a smaller 20GB-64GB SSD to make full use of it.

If you tried to do video editing directly on SSDs, that would involve a lot of writes as well. If you're worried about write-endurance, that will probably become an issue over time, but the nature of the cache is such that it should be cheaply replaceable by the time that happens, which would probably take a while. Also, since all the data would be ultimately be written to your mechanical hard drives, there's little chance of data loss due to SSD failure.

You MUST remember not all SSD are equal... they all FEEL fast but when doing video editing, DB work, and other tasks where you can actually tell the difference it REALLY makes a HUGE difference. 2-4 older SSD in RAID0 writing may be just as fast as a SINGLE 840 Pro, PLextor m5 Pro, etc.

Also, some SSD are better for reads than writes, and vice-versa... plan with that if going SSD.

No matter what i'd use the SSD for the operating system :)

30 minutes is about 240-250GB
but i'll only use those DNG when editing, then I'll archive using cineform.
Essentially I would archive about 3tb worth
i was planning on getting a raid controller
any suggestions under $400?
 
would two of the blacks in raid be better than two
ST3000DM001
in raid 0?
it seems the ST3000DM001 are faster in write and read performance?
