Best driver version for 8500?

With nvidia's drivers, after a certain driver there is no improvement in old cards as they're concentrating on their new models.

Is this the same with ATI's catalysts? What would be the ideal version for the 8500?

I looked at the performance of the 9000-9200 and was rather amazed to find out that they were even slower than the 8500. What a misleading numbering system. So I've decided to get a 8500 instead.
 
I believe in the 4.2's or so, ATi mentioned a speed increase on the older cores due to some optimizations.

In early reviews when the 9000 was new it didnt perform all that well compared to the ti4200 or 8500, but after a bit of tweaking (later reviews) it performed a lot better.
 
I thought the 9200 was an 8500 just with updated core/memory speeds

Update: When I was on my 8500 I didn't notice better performance after the late 3's early 4's Catalyst version
 
I think with the case with the 8500 being faster than the 9000/9200 is the fact that it's pixel pipeline is a 4x2 form rather than the 9000/9200's 4x1 design. The 9100 (not the IGP) should be the direct replacement for the 8500 though with it's 4x2 design.

the newest drivers are always the best because they have bug fixes and new features along with performance improvments. you can try the website below for a comprehensive analysis of each catalyst release (but on a 9700)
