i have a 320gb hard drive that i've done probably 7 windows reinstalls on where the old windows folder gets moved to windows.old. Point being, this thing hasn't been freshly formatted in ages. from what i understand, its better if often used files are clustered together, so i'm asking, what defrag solution is best to achieve this?

im currently running Mydefrag system disk monthly script, but is there a better one i should be running? theres 180gb used out of 296gb

Win 7 does not need to be defragmented, it does it automatically in the background.

win 7 is not efficient, I find it badly fragmented all the time. I use Defraggler. it is free and it works great. free to download, just google it.

Defraggler, Auslogics....both very good, pick one. :) Plenty of other topics with the same question and the same answers

I really like PerfectDisc 11, been using since version 8 or so, I really like the background idle defrag, set it and forget it.

Windows7 does defragment in the background using a lite version of Diskeeper. I've never seen my drive more than 1% fragmented and I move around a LOT of files.

Ssd you don't need one. For my drive where I store all my porn I mean my applications and such I use defraggler. Small installer package, doesn't have any active services nor needs 200 drivers to defrag your drive. It does what all other windows defragment utilities does and that's make use of the windows api. Only difference is it comes without the bloated junk. You can run it off a Usb stick even.

I turn Win7's automatic defragmenter off, and every few months when I think of it, I run it manually. More than this is not necessary.

thanks guys. i know in most situations it isn't necessary but given that my hard drive has been reinstalled on like 9 times i had like 43% fragmentation. I'm down to 11%

You should consider a clean install after formatting the drive to start completely fresh the next time you do an install instead of saving all the windows.old garbage.

i consider it every time but then i also consider the time it would take to backup my data, considering i'm limited to usb2.0 or wireless g for getting it off the hard drive.

I don't know what OS you are running but the built in defragger works just fine. Run something like CCleaner first though to clear all temp files, then delete all of the windows.old folders you have. The main advantage of the defragger is that it will separate files, then compact them again at the front of the drive. It's much faster with as little data as possible on the drive. Deleting all unnecessary files and programs is important.

So you have like 9 copies of windows.old on the hdd?

I just let Windows 7 handle things, and it seems to be doing a pretty good job. Just like SirMaster, I have never seen my hard drive over 1% fragmented.
