I'm looking for a better piece of software for backups for my laptop. I currently use the built in backup software in windows vista but its a huge pain to find anything. Is there any piece of software that backs up the file without putting it into an archive.

Sure, that would be xcopy. :)

Seriously, the whole point of actual "backup" software is to create an archive, keep it simple and manageable, etc. If you just want dupes of everything then Explorer or xcopy from the command line can do what you require.

You gotta sit down and decide precisely what you want first and then go find software that fills the requirements.

I'm using backup dwarf from here: backup software on my laptop - storing backups on NAS from dlink. it does automatic retries so I don't miss any schedule even on network failures.

This is what I do. By no means, is this the absolute best solution. The best solution depends on the individual.

I relocate the "My Documents" folder to a second partition. So, if some day, I restore my OS, my documents remain where they are.

So, all my irreplaceable data (tax files, pictures, music, bank documents, contacts, emails, calendars, ....) is located in one organized folder. Now, all I need to backup is located in one place.

I use a free program called Cobian (http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm). It starts when Windows starts.
It lets you set full, differential or incremental bckup tasks that run on a schedule you define, and it runs missed backups. It is very powerful.

I used to do that... Then I discovered Dropbox. All of my documents are automatically backup to the cloud instantly as they are changed and automatically downloaded to any other PC i have Dropbox running on.

Embrace Web2.0/Cloud Computing. :)

I wouldn't store my critical (finance, personal, ...) data online.

It is encrypted to the server and while it's stored on the server. You know just a few years ago the vast majority of people said they would never shop online.

To the OP: If you don't want the backups to create an archive then you could use something lke Syncback http://www.2brightsparks.com/. You can do anything you could possibly want using this.

+1 for Dropbox, really easy to use and it gets completely out of your way.
The free account gives you 2GB of storage, with this referer link you get 250MB extra, 2.25GB total.

(yes, i get 250MB more too, so it's win-win :))

There's also robocopy; which is like a more powerful xcopy. Vista's got it built in already too.

Me too. But some of these backup softwares are really very great(such as PC BackUp,Genie Backup Manager,Acronis True Image and so on). And many people insolved their problems with them.
