Best CPU for graphics rendering

Hi all,

So at the moment, what's the best CPU for graphics rendering in terms of best possible CPU and also best 'bang for buck'? The CPU would theoretically live in a unit which would be part of a farm of PC's that would be exactly the same all used to render graphics animation art.

Best readily available consumer CPU for rendering: i7 965
Best bang for buck: Q6600 or i7 920

I expect this will be quite hotly debated though...

edit: If you get a system based on one of the i7 Nehalem CPUs you should be able to drop in the octo-core Nehalems when they are released (I'm unsure on this though, so I'd wait for someone else to confirm or deny it).

I heard the i7 920 was great for rendering and the price isn't that bad either.

Look at the first bench, "CPU-Bound 3D Rendering" using Kribi. They got in the 12's with the i7's.

FYI, my X2 6000+ got mid 4's when I ran those same tests. I found out later that dnetc (even at 0 priority) seems to slow it down a little, so that may be a tad lower than it should be. I would've retested it, but I already sold the system. My i7 920 with HT disabled matches what they say in the text (9's).

if you are aiming for a certain throughput remember, the weaker the cpu you buy the more total systems required... so more $ power snd heat. Sometimes faster cpu is better if it means less mobos, cases, etc. Especially with intels god awful motherboard prices.
