Which is generally considered better, Datacolor Spyder 3 Pro or X-Rite One display lt? This would be for say monitors and I'm no expert so it would have to be somewhat basic calibration...

I'd recommend an upgrade to a quality IPS display.
A TN panel like in your sig probably isn't even going to be able to calibrate properly to anywhere close to 100%.

Either colorimeter should do the job. I know at least one pro photographer who uses some version of x-rite and really likes their products and the way they get behind the community.
 
I am planing on getting a new Dell when it is released. The new 24 inch IPS LED that is...
