I dvr a lot of movies/shows with my htpc, and i need the best cpu for removing the commercials from the shows. my current chip is a s754 a64 3400. it's not oc'ed or anything. currently removing commercials from a 30 minute shows takes 20 minutes and doing a 2 hour movie is way too long. i also want to convert my dvd's to wmv too. currently removing commercials takes up so much time, that it slows the htpc down to a crawl and makes it almost unusable until it's done (so hopefully a multi core cpu would do the trick)

Are you against overclocking?

If not, grab an E6400 and clock it up to 3.2... A p5b-E board would get you there for about 150$ (that's the -e version not the vanilla one).

You'd need to get your A64 to about... oh god, 4.2ghz to match that speed ;).

Do you think a SC at 4.2 will match a 3.2 DC in video editing ? ;)
 
get what ever C2D you can afford.... if you arent OCing. Otherwise get a e4300 with a good mobo and OC it. The higher the clock speed the fast, but even the e4300 will be able to encode and use the HTPC at the sametime...

my 3200+ A64 encodes divx at night and I can still watch TV on 2 different streams from it... but a DC is definately the way to go
 
im not against overclocking, i just don't want to bank my performance on it. i'd rather get what i want stock, then OC if possible. since its gonna be my htpc, the most important thing is stability.
 
I think you want at least a E6600 with the extra cache - the bigger and more cores the better. Quad cores were benching about the same as C2D in most things but in video encoding it had (in one review) a 67% boost over C2D. Video encoding was the one thing it aced. Still, an E6600 should be nice.
 
It depend on your budget. I would sugest like anyone a E4300 and oc it, or you want a AMD am2 board with the processor wich the price dropped by lots and could be interesting. Or the Xeon 3040 at 200$ could be interesting because it will heat less its the same speed has a C2D e6300 and its LGA775. If you have a good budget go for quad core :) otherwise a 4M cache cpu.
 
What hardware and software are you currently using? I am thinking of setting up a pvr system.

ati hdtv wonder tuner

nothing spectacular like some peoples setup, but it does everything i want beautifully. the last piece of the puzzle for me is getting the machine to remove commercials from recorded shows. i only really watch tv on the weekends, so removing the commercials will make things really convenient for me.
