what app(s) provide the best quality to ripping mp3's from a cd. An article in Maximum pc had the programs and steps to rip it, but i lost the article

Use Exact Audio Copy to rip the CD, then use RazorLame to encode them.
 
EAC is my choice as well. Check out ubernet.org for proper high quality ripping info.
 
I used to use EAC to do my ripping, that is until foobar came along. Now I just use the diskwriter to convert straight from the CD to OGG or a LAME VBR mp3. Just a thing of convenience since it has freedb support, tag editing, plus the rest of my music to listen to while I convert in one package. Is there any reason that I shouldn't be doing this? As in, will using EAC->LAME yield higher quality results? I haven't really looked into what process foobar uses to convert, but since it uses a CLI encoder setup I didn't think it would be any different from using EAC.
 
CD Ex!!!! Ripps and encodes and connects to database for tracks, you can use a variety of different encoding too

IMHO i think that Easy CD-DA extractor is really good. You have good control over how files and folders are named. Also, you have options on the bit rate encoding for mp3s and it also supports wma if that floats your boat. Tracks are named from the freecd database.
 
In Windows, I can't recommend anything besides Exact Audio Copy as well. I usually use FLAC to encode (lossless), Vorbis encoder, or LAME.
 
Another vote for EAC! No need to use razorlame though....EAC can be configured to do the encoding (with LAME) for you! read the guide at www.ubernet.org.....heck, while you're there, might as well join the hub!
