What is the best card under $85. Don't say to spend more becuase I am on a very strict budget. The games I will be playing are Doom 3, HL2, and Halo. I don't care if it is used or refurbished. I was thinking a 9500np L-shaped memory or a 9600 pro. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, I would appreciate it if you could post a link to where I could buy it at that price. Thanks.

AGP sadly. Is there anywhere where I can find a cheap used or refurbished 6200? Do the AGP's softmod?

usually on cards in this range AGP is a little bit more expensive than pci-e. It looks like you would have to go up to 100 to get the 6200 in agp.

was searching the FS/FT forum, was going to post ya a link, but it looks like you found it.

It also seems that you can get a 9600pro refurbed from newegg easily for around 80 bucks.

How do they compare to a 4600.

a ti4600 is about equal to a 9600pro from what i've read in the past

no idea how it compares to a 6200 , i would guess the 6200 would be somewhat faster

Man Ure Best Bet Is To Go With Some Version Of The 9600 Series. Solid Performance, Dx9, And Plays Everything Out There.

Man I would jump all over that 6200 if it was agp. Anybody know where I can find a cheap one. Also does that outperform a 9600. Someone just offered me a 9500np that softmods for $85 would you take that.

a 9600 hands the 6200 its ass, just because there next gen doesnt mean the lowest of the next gen is better than the top of the old gen, because thats not the case. if its a 9500np modded to pro, assuming he got the other 4 pipes unlocked then jump all over that and flash to a 9700 pro.

well if u can trust him, then get it. Make sure you can because the np to pro in the 9500 didnt have the highest success rate from what ive heard

The AGP ones don't softmod, as they use a different core.

Depends on the model. Even at stock speed (4 pipelines, 300MHz core and 550MHz memory), a 6200 w/128-bit memory beats the 9600 Pro in a couple of games and is between the 9600 and 9600 Pro in others (but loses in HL2): http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/gffx/nv43-5.html

The 6200 also has the ability to massively overclock since it the same NV43 core as the 6600GT and seems to have a very good chance of unlocking all 8 pipelines -- all with stock cooling and no voltage mods. After doing that, it performs as well as cards costing much more.

The AGP ones are NV43 cores (native PCI-E) with a bridge chip on the board. Look at the picture.

I was under the understanding that they used a different core for the PCI-E version based on some preliminary tests at Xtremesystems. Kind of like how the 6800NU on PCI-E can't unlock.

You must have heard wrong then. All the current 6200 cards, PCI-E and AGP, are NV43-based.

nvidia did announce today a "cheaper 6200 AGP" for $79 and I speculated that it was probably the NV44 with a bridge chip based on a new entry in the 76.10 drivers. The details are in the nvidia forum 6800 Ultra 512MB thread.

after reading posts from both pxc and ackbar, the 6200 is THE budget card. They have overclocked them really high, and with 8 pipelines you get above vanilla 6600 scores. I plan on buying an AGP one if the price ever goes down (or i'll just wait till ATI brings their AGP's, which will lower prices of nvidia's)

that item will sell for more than that with shipping...you just wait :)

Softmodded 6200

3277 3DMark05 http://service.futuremark.com/servl...rojectId=660458

36.9fps Doom3 HQ 1600x1200 (same config as listed above)

65.45fps CS:S 1600x1200 (same config as listed above)

Hmmmmm, results like these almost make me want to sell my ti4200 and try out a 6200 in my backup rig. Those results are better than my old oc'd 9800 Pro which only managed 2925 in 3dmark05 and 35fps in Doom3 at 1280x1024 HQ. Not to shabby.

Well, according to some of these people a 9600 would smoke it. I am still trying to decide between that and a 9500np softmodded.

well i linked you to some nice cards in our own forums. check them out..they are at the price u need.

from this review it looks like the 9600pro is about double the 4600.

But really the biggest difference would be that the 4600 is directx8 card and the 9600pro is a directx9.

man look at this 9600pro smash a ti4200............hahaha, right. they seem to perform about the same, give or take a little unnoticable difference here or there.

and i thought the 9500np would flash to 9700np ?

i linked to the first page of the review, if you click next, you notice that in games at low resolutions that the 4600 is about the same as the 9600pro.

Tom's hardware review have about the same results for 3dmark, but if you notice the 9600pro pulls away from the 4600 when they go to higher resolutions and turn AA on...

Uh, the Ti4600 can't run some of the 3DMark03 tests so of course it will get a much lower score. The 9600 supports PS2.0, the Ti4600 only supports up to PS1.3.

Look at the real game benchmarks and the results are mixed. The Ti4600 wins most, the 9600Pro wins some. The GF4 Ti series had very slow FSAA, so it loses in most tests when FSAA enabled.

so what you are saying is that the 4600 is only slightly not as good...
unless you can get a good deal on a used one from a friend that makes it pointless,
from my quick searching i couldnt find a 4600 under 100 bucks. Yet I found about a dozen 9600pro's for under his price limit of $85. Your argument doesnt make since to me? You would pay more for a slightly worse card that you claim is only worse because it doesnt have the newer technology the 9600pro does.

If it was between the 4600 and the 9600pro, i would choose the 9600pro hands down, as it ha the newer technology, slightly faster and about 20 bucks cheaper...

I can trade it straight up for a 9500 pro or 9500np that softmods. I thonk both cards outperform it by a lot and are DX9 so why wouldn't I do that?

the only thing is the 9600pro/9500pro are too slow to really take advantage of any of the dx9 features.
