I just want to extend the life of my sons PC for a little while longer and the last item to upgrade seems to be the graphics card.

Note: he's only 5 years old but his Nascar2001 and Trainz games seem to be sucking the life out of the Radeon 7000!

Intel BX mobo/1.4Ghz Tually
512MB PC100 SDRAM CL2
Radeon7000 64MB/AGPx2
SlowasshellATA33/13MBHD

Well... depends on what you would like to spend.

Ati 8500/8500le/9100
Nvidia ti4200-4600
Ati 9600Xt
Ati 9500 pro
Nvidia 5900 series.(not sure check for agp 3.3v support)
Ati 9700 series

Really depends on the prices of each card as to what I would suggest.

9800 pros require newer chipsets then the Bx due to nolonger supporting 3.3 volt agp slots.

A 128MB TI4200 sounds like the best bet in this price range. Try to check on the for sale forums for some sweet deals.

What if I yank the Powercolor 9600pro out of my other PC, would it be compatible with the BX mobo? How would I find out about compatibility?

Before buying, you should check out AGP 2X compatibility for ATI 9600 Pro and 9600XT

I think it supports only AGP 8X / 4X:cool:

I don't think you should look at anything more powerful than a 9600np.
You would probally just be bottlenecked by the rest of the system. I can't believe that someone reconmended a 9700pro! When I upgraded my athlon 1.2 radeon 7000 to radeon 9500 pro, I only got half of its true potential. Don't waste your money. Get a 9600 np.

No one suggested a 9700 pro. I did suggested a list of cards which included the 9700 series...look at his sig, one might noticed a 9600 pro...so something in that range might be a waste of money, an upgrade for his main rig might be a better value.

Normally one can turn up image quality features...resolution/aa/af etc.
