Play on a U2311h Dell 1900x1080

New SB build soon and having hard time deciding.

Do I go for a 460/470 or 6870 or wait for a drop or throw 20-40 bucks more for a 6950 or 560??

What would you get if you didn't OC ??


What would you get if you did OC?? (i assume the 6950)

Brands im looking at are...EVGA MSI and XFX
 
Well I've the Asus 2GB 6950. flashed and OC'd it and its working great.
Run BlackOps, BC2 and BulletStorm at 1920x1200 with no issues

Memory will probably not be a limitation for some time to come for 1080p. The 560 once overclocked can be competitive with the 6950, and it's a good deal cheaper at the price I posted, so in this rare case I recommend the 560 over the 6950.

Yep, 6950 if you can or the 6870. Some sweet deals on the 6870's last couple of weeks. I got mine for $170.
 
He said $200. I don't see any 6950's for $200.

If you want brand new 200 or less the GTX 460 1 MB is your card. If you can swing a bit more then look at the 6950.
 
eh... a 33% increase of power consumption and 20% in cost for a 10% increase in performance doesn't seem that great. the locked shaders on the 6990 still use power.
 
At 1080p, with a card like the 6870 you're already pushing max settings and varying levels of AA. With a good OCer like the 560 you'll have insanely high settings, as you will with the 6950. You're gameplay experience with either the 560 or the 6950 will be identical. As I said before, I highly recommend you save the money and go with the Galaxy 560 for $195 AR, it's the best for you.

EDIT: IMO a card like this just should come with a longer warranty. It's a shame that Galaxy of all companies doesn't have a three-year warranty like PowerColor, especially with Galaxy's customer service quality. Either way the card itself is a beast for the price, Linus broke 1GHz using 1,112 mV, and he was just dialing it in.

I am leaning toward saving my money with the evga. Also i could go with an AR version with a lifetime limited warranty.

Im not really seeing a big difference to spending 150 or going for a 200$ card...and i only see a major difference if i go for a 6950 or 560 which will cost me at least $250 atm
 
Be careful, that EVGA 460 is the SE version with 288 cores, not 336 cores. Which makes it much slower than the stock 460. Go for a AR version, but make sure it is NOT an SE (I don't think there is any AR SE versions).
 
I linked you a Galaxy 560 which will destroy any 460 model for the same price after MIR. The 560 is a significantly better card, if you're spending $200 on a GPU the 460 isn't worth it. Buy a 460 1GB if you find one in the ~$150 range

EDIT: I didn't adequately explain this. Some may say that you shouldn't generalize about anything, but for GPUs it works nicely. The 460 at stock volts hits ~800MHz, the 560 hits ~970MHz, the 460 gets 1000MHz QDR and the 560 gets ~1150MHz QDR, so they're on completely different performance levels, and the 560 is slightly more efficient, which doesn't hurt temperatures.

EDIT2: And if you're considering doing multi-GPU, do NOT get a 560. The 560 is a kickass single GPU and its VRAM is just right for its raw performance, but with two in SLI anything >1920 will become bottlenecked really quick. In that case the 6950 2GB is the best bang over buck for multi GPU currently available.

just bought the galaxy. my only concern at the moment is the fact that the MIR is not working when i clicked...Now i can see my order until tigerdirect updates my order in my account.

I bought a Sapphire 2gb 6950 for 220, and I'm having buyers remourse over the galaxy deal, what do you guys think?
 
If you want to save the money then yes, but the 6950 is faster at high resolutions and slightly faster at low resolutions so it's not bad.
 
So much bad advice in this thread. Shame on anyone suggesting a GTX 460 at the $200 price point. Especially an SE.
