Specs are in my sig.

When I built the computer in my sig a little over a year ago I recycled my 4830 from my old system and told myself I'll upgrade in the future. Well, I think that time has come. I just got Starcraft 2 last week and I'm getting big slowdowns during huge battles which is really annoying. I'd also like to finally enjoy Bad Company 2 with 4x AA enabled.

So all I'm concerned about is the highest performance for ~ $200.

Suggestions please.
 
I think the main contenders in the price range are the Nvidia GTX 460, and ATI 6850. They are both pretty much comparable to each other.
 
Agreed. At $200, the 5850 is the best card available.
 
Also a fan of the 5850 at $200 out the door

I really hope a 6950 is like a crossfire 6850, but that will probably be $400, then a 6970 as a crossfire 6870 would be $550? Just speculation, but maybe twice the core and a return of 512 bit memory to separate from the 6800 line?

I didn't do my own research hehe. I thought he linked to it but it was automaticxally linked. I still stand by what I said earlier though. Get the 6850. You'll probably be a bit happier with it.
 
Yea, I'm between the 5850 and 6850. Won't be buying till the end of the month probably so I have some time to think about it.
 
Gigabyte and XFX 6850's were $171 yesterday.
From Superbiiz website, not Newegg.
 
What's wrong with the 460 1GB?? They can be found a little cheaper than the 6850 and have the same performance potential
 
Seems like there is some consensus on your choices: ATI 5850, 6850, or nVidia 460. My suggestion is the 6850 but maybe you should just make a poll and let people vote and explain their choices... that could be fun, especially if you are not planning on purchasing before the end of the month. :)

That's a good idea lol. I think I might do that.
 
Another thing to consider is triplehead (if you ever want to go that rout in the future). The requirements are different for all three of those cards.

HD 5850 needs a DisplayPort to DVI adapter
HD 6850 needs a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter
GTX 460 needs a second GTX460

Definitely cheaper to go triple-monitor with ATi at this point, but two GTX 460's in SLI would perform amazingly.

I'm pretty sure I read some place that these converters need to be active (costing a lot more) in order to generate a clocking signal for DVI/VGA, as DisplayPort does not require one and the card itself only has two clock generators.
 
5850 at those prices is a ridiculously good deal - and some of them can clock extremely high, to 5870 performance levels, which is perf/price
