Best budget 17" LCD?

Not for me, and not for gaming. But my parents need a decent 17" or 19" LCD for their PC. I'm a CRT guy and my Hitachi 19" CRT has served me well for years. I haven't even looked at LCD's lately.

Anywho, color reproduction, contrast and general overall video quality is more important than a fast millisecond speed. I also need to give them a recommendation of a good brand, or even exact model, of something that is available in the big retail chains.

So if they walk into Best Buy, OfficeMax or Circuit City, which is the best they can get? Where should I steer them?

Thanks,
Robert

My advice would be to look locally at a Samsung 173P. If possible, have a salesman hook up DVI because both text and graphics with a digital connection are far better than the usual analog hookup used at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

There are much better displays for gaming, but since gaming isn't an issue, I think your parents will like this monitor. FYI, there are some excellent deals available at the moment online for nearly any monitor, including the 173P. Check it (or any display which might interest you) locally first, though, to make sure it'll meet your needs. Then check out the available deals.

The last time I noticed, J&R had this on sale for $319 after an $80 rebate. I paid about $630 for mine a year or so ago.

Edit: Tired when I posted; "discount" changed to rebate.

I always heard Samsung was nice. I do like their CRT monitors.

OK, thanks.

My mom uses her PC very infrequently, reguardless however I bought her an LCD for Christmas.

It was a Proview 17'' LCD that I paid $209 out for door for at Staples. Set it up, colors/resolution seem fine for what she needed. I think anything in the $200-300 range will suite you well, its those response times that everyone is paying a premium for.
