I'd like to add Bluetooth capability to my desktop. Which USB dongle is the best?

They're all fairly cheap, but I have no experience in this area. My notebook PC came with Bluetooth built in.

I'm not entirely sure I "need" a Bluetooth 4.0 dongle. While BT 4.0 is the latest thing, from what I'm reading it simply reduces power consumption somewhat - no increase in data rate or range. I don't own any Bluetooth 4.0-capable devices anyway so it seems an older model would be fine.

I would be using the dongle mainly with a Nokia E5-00 phone and a Motorola H17 headset.
 
They should all be really similar. I've been running a cheap one for 3 years with no problems.
 
I have three different cheap generic bluetooth dongles and they all work great. My advice is to head over to dealextreme and buy the ones with good reviews. They're dirt cheap--like $2.00 and shipping is free. I've used them with mice, a headset, and a couple different older phones.
 
Thanks, that is exactly what I'm going to do.

There doesn't seem to be any reason to go with the newer Bluetooth 3.0 or 4.0 dongles vs. the cheaper (as you say, sub-$2) Bluetooth 2.0 dongles. Bluetooth 3 and 4 add features that really aren't relevant for me, since my phone is "only" Bluetooth 2.0 compliant. The only material differences between Bluetooth versions 2 through 4 are increasing power savings.
