Right now, what would have to be the best bang for the buck mobo/cpu combo for p4?

Thanks in advance

DFI Lanparty UT 915P and a pentium 4 530 3.0GHz

The processor is only about $190 and that motherboard has both DDR and DDR2.

athlon 64 :p

:D

id have to agree with the guy above or get the setup in my rig below...

For goodness sake, the man asked for a P4 and you suggest an A64? And he doesn't state what he'll be using it for, or why he chose a P4. What is he does massive content creation? If he said that he would be doing nothing but playing games then your suggestion would be justified.

Anyway, I would suggest the P4 530 as the above poster said, but I would get the ASUS P5GD1 instead. Seems to be a good mobo supporting DDR.

well all he said was "bang for the buck"

which you have to admit...athlon 64s fit the bill perfectly.

He said more than "bang for the buck." That was his title
A64's dont fit the bill for a good price/performance pentium 4 system at all though

Don't get a Prescott whatever you do. They suck. Find a Northwood 3.0 or better with HT. Get any reputable brand's 875 chipset mobo.

prescotts perform margianlly slower than northwoods, and overclock much higher than northwoods on average. there is nothing wrong with getting a prescott over a northwood. if the northwood core was so much better than the prescott, then why are all desktop and workstation cpu's going to prescott and prescott like derivatives.

as for motherboards, the i875p chipset is still a very powerfull chipset. as said before, any brand name 875 board is good.

Power consumption and heat generation.

If your going the p4 route, I'd go with a northwood cpu, runs WAY WAY cooler, overclocks nicely (all the 3.0's I've had or assembled have hit 3.6 easy), and you can run a nice heatsink/fan setup (like the 3dCoolerPro) and still hear the world around you instead of the whirl of a prescott fan, even at 3.7ghz.

If gaming is your main focus, ya might wanna check out the AMD64 3000+ Winchester Core cpu. They really do rock the house. At 2.4ghz (overclocked 266mhz FSB) it is faster then my northwood was at 3.0@3.675ghz (245fsb) in games. At media encoding the p4 makes the AMD64 look like it's got a busted leg and bum hip.

I'm still in awe that dell put a prescott in my laptop, a nice shiney 3.0 northwood is finding it's way in there one of these days.
