Best Athlon XP HSF?

My friend is having serious problemos with his HSF overheating.

What would be the best HSF to go with some Arctic Silver?

Thanks!

Depends what your budget is and your uses for the comp. If you're not gonna be overclocking and just need something to keep things cool then I would recommend a Vantec Aeroflow althogu I have heard that they are on the loud side. If you wanna do some OCing and have some extra cash I would go with the Zalman CNPS7000cu or the Thermalright SLK 800 A/U or 900 A/U.

First off, re-mount it. If it still yields the same results, get a new heatsink fan. I have the Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu and it works great, silent even on full blast. Plus it comes with a fan unlike the Thermalright heatsinks. The full copper version is more expensive and way heavier but is only a little better. Another popular solution is the Thermalright slk-9xx series. The slk-900A is almost guaranteed to work with his mobo since it uses a clip (you might run into clearance issues though). The slk-947U is good too but it requires mounting holes and is not compatible with many mobos. Before he buys anything, check the Zalman and Thermalright websites for compatibility info.

yes, i also recommend the Zalman AlCu

however, do some research before you want to purchase a new HSF because some may not be compatible with your mobo. for example, the NF7-S is not compatible with the Zalman (w/o minor tweaking  )

There's a lot of good hsf's out there. Hard to say which is the best, because it depends on what's most important to you (noise level or performance level).

The vantec aeroflow is actually really good, and compared to a tornado fan, it's fairly quiet. BUT, it's not quiet compared to a normal or stock HSF.

I'd go with a cheap but good HSF like the coolermaster aero 7 lite, which is around $15 shipped on sites like svc and newegg... unless you got money to spend....

Check here for a performance list of socket A coolers... pay attention to the fans used (noise level).

I'm using a Thermalright SLK-947U with a Panaflo 92mm fan on top and it works quite well and is really quiet. In hindsight I think I'd use a 80mm fan as the 92mm's motor/blade hub is so large that it creates more of a dead spot right in the middle of the heatsink, but at idle my temps on the XP 2800+ are about 43C, and under 100% load are around 46C. If his temps have just been going up then the heatsink probably just needs a good dusting, my XP 1600+ temps dropped about 8-10C from just blowing out the dust

I like my Thermalrights ;) best heatsink ever made. Just get the fan you want and your set... cool and silent or loud and idling in the high 20c on air :p

Shows Thermalright can tie or beat watercooling :D

I will say it again... Thermalright is the best heatsink out!

So quiet you dont even know its there...
http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/fan-25.html
Air Flow 28 CFM
Fan Speed 1750 RPM
Power 0.84 W
Bearing Type Dual Ball Bearing
Fan Size 92x92x25 MM
Noise Level 20 db

Beat or tie watercooling...
http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/fan-34.html
Air Flow 119 CFM
Fan Speed 4800 RPM
Power 12.5 W
Bearing Type Dual Ball Bearing
Fan Size 92x92x38 MM
Noise Level 56.4 db

Show me another heatsink that can idle in the high 20c :p

My Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu idles 28 C on my rig. It's possible if your ambient temp. is low like mine.

At what speeds is the fan spinning at on your Zalman? And just how cool is it at your house or in the room your in?

Very nice speeds. My Thermalright with a Y's tech fan let me idle @ 26c when the AC is on during the summer and its cool in the room. With AC off its idling at 31-33c.

My Zalman is running full speed, which should be ~2200 rpm. It's still almost inaudible though. My house is like 15 C right now since it's winter-spring.

My wife and kids make me keep the heat on in the winter... so not so cool in my house during winter.

quite, but also a great cooling power, lower profile, light, and easy to install.. and still kicks ass..

my 2600+ running att 2.3 or 2.4 dosn't go over 48 while im in ut2004, and idle is anywhere from 37 to 40, and I only have 2 system fans, and my psu has 2 fans in it(But they are very slow speeds)

Vantec Aeroflow was king in its day...but that was like 2 years ago :)

The vantec aeroflow is still very nice, and quiet compared to a tornado, but not so quiet compared to the average (stock) heatsink fan.

Best XP heatsink by far is the Thermalright SP-97. Couple that with a Vantec 92mm tornado and it will not be beat by any other type of air cooling.

Definitely. You don't even need a Tornado to get good performance. A 92mm fan pushing somewhere around 50cfm will be more than plenty.

bet my Swiftech could match it
