Well, we have a root thread so we need a market thread! (And an up to date one too ;) )

Unless otherwise noted, all free apps.

My must have's list

Newest Google maps
TasKiller
SuperGNES (Paid)
APNDroid
Facebook sync (For non sense users, this integrates FB Profiles+Pics with your contacts)
NetSentry (Monitoring data usage)
Urban Spoon
Places Directory
Evernote
Handcent SMS (Pop up, quick reply, customizable colors... All around upgrade over the original SMS app)
Weatherbug
Meebo IM
Backgrounds
eoeAppInstaller (For non market apk installation, like for swype ;) )

CopyCat's MASTER list ;)
Calvin & Hobbes - If you love the comic its a good app to pass the time :)
TrailMaps - Awesome for those who snowboard/ski
Movies - A good app to look up movies
Paypal - I use Paypal all the time and the app is extremely easy to use
Mint.com - I use Mint to keep track of all my daily financial accounts and the new app rocks, even has a great widget
Amazon - One of the only services I use to actually shop through my phone….1-click check out is awesome!
eBay - I am a fairly avid auction shopper…this allows me to bid on the go easily
Engadget – One of my more favorite tech/gadget blogs and their app is actually very well made
XDA – It isn’t perfect but I like to keep up to date on my XDA stuff for my Nexus One
Foursquare – Fun program, see how long it lasts….checking into places etc etc
Twitter – I don’t twitter a lot but their default app is simply better than any 3rd party one I have used
Facebook – If you use facebook a lot, there ya go
Shazam – Still a great app
Pandora – Just in case my own playlists get boring
Bump – A fun way to trade info/pics etc and one of the only apps I know of that works across Android to iPhone
AK Notepad – I don’t use it all the time but when I do it has been very helpful
Astra File Manager – Again don’t use it all the time but when it was needed it was very helpful
Documents to Go (Paid – I paid for the full version and it was worth it…great app to access pretty much any regular office file I could think of
Discovery – I was super stoked when this came out for Android and it is what I wanted. Access to all kinds of videos and information about the shows.
Dropbox – I have started getting more familiar with Dropbox and using it more often so the Android app was a welcome addition
MyBackup Pro (Paid) – I am weird when it comes to backing up my data and this app does it better than any other I know of…scheduling backups rules!
SMS Popup – I like seeing the SMS popup window before opening my phone in case I need to answer right away or can leave it be

Google Apps (Separate these)
Maps
Goggles
Google Sky Map
Google Translate
Google Reader
Shopper
Ringdroid
Listen
Car (Navigation)
Barcode Scanner

Browsers (All need work but figured I’d list them)
Default Android – Works best usually and is straight forward
Fennex (Firefox) – Has lots of potential and the layout is actually nice, but still bugging since it is in Beta
Opera Mini 5 – I love the starting screen and is by far the fastest at loading pages since it does most of that on their servers
Skyfire – Found a work around for videos which actually works a lot of the time.

No idea why people keep insisting on Task Killer, it's been highly recommended to not install this app as the functionality is already built into the OS.

Assistant Free (and paid version too) - Great for keep track of all finances, CCs, Netflix, rewards programs
Dolphin Browser - For tabbed browsing
Pandora
Root Explorer - Only good if you're rooted. Gives you write permission for the phones file system.
Mabilo Ringtones - You can pretty much find anything you want on here.
Funny Jokes - Plenty of categories and has great jokes that are always updated
Bedside - Paid - Best clock to have on your night stand because it lowers brightness down to 10% and is fully customizable (colors, font, size, format, etc.). Best if used with "LEDs Hack" to disable the home buttons back light.
K9 Mail - Most compatible and easy to set up mail app for POP3, IMAP and Exchange. Can be used with multiple accounts.
All of the "oid" emulators - Great emulators. Get a Game Gripper to appreciate it even more!
PdaNet - Great for USB/BT tethering.
Remote RDP Lite - Remote desktop to your home PC, works pretty good.

Games:
Toss it - Same game from iPhone/iPod Touch, pretty addictive
Air Control - Very addictive! My fav (free) game so far!
PapiJump - Very simple and a good time waster if you just have a couple mins
Throttlecopter - Simple 2D helicopter game, another good time waster.

Aldiko (e-reader, paid)
Asphalt 5 (game, paid)
Astro File manager (must have)
Barcode Scanner
Bubble (level, be sure to calibrate)
Calorie Counter (pretty badass for the food conscious)
CIDR Calculator (for networking nerds)
Classic Simon (game)
CPR-Choking (could save a life, good for when out of practice - which is always unless you're an EMT)
DirecTV (who doesn't want to program their DTV DVR remotely?)
Documents to Go (paid, worth every cent)
Easy Scorecard (golf)
Key Ring (scan your value cards, etc)
Google Listen (stream your fav podcasts)
Live Scores (sports)
Knots Guide (paid, self explanatory)
MotoTorch LED (use cam flash as light, morse code, etc)
NESoid (paid, emulator)
SNESoid (paid, emulator)
Musical Pro (tuner, metronome, etc)
PicSayPro (photo editor)
Pulse Rider (game)
Scanner Radio (listen to police radio)
Shazam (figure out songs)
Space Physics (game, must have - incredibly addictive)
Survival Manual (paid, must have)
Timeriffic (set custom schedules for just about any phone feature, i.e. turn on/off bluetooth, ringers, etc)

Note that some of what I listed above could be paid apps, but nothing costs more than a few bucks.

Because if you don't then the battery gets drained

My list always changes but I will share some of mine :)

Can someone plz explain what rooting an android phone means. im jumping on the htc evo phone the end of summer and im trying to understand the lingo.

If someone can manage this, can we sticky this? I'm planning on getting an android based phone. Having this resource available would be a real community service.

I'm always changing my apps based on the amount of support from the developer

Mobile Defense ( find your phone , lost or stolen)
Google gesture
PDAnet (usb /blutooth tethering for non rooted phones)
Autoresponder
HelixLauncher

You gain root access to the phone. This allows you full control over the system, ability to edit system files, run special apps that will only run on a rooted phone because it needs more system access, and I believe you can install apps and your cache on an SD card with a rooted phone.

Thx. I guess ill bring this to the table in august when i get my hands on the htc evo phone. But is this something i should do immediately? Or should i get accustomed to an android phone first, then consider rooting my phone? Mind you i have never really played with an android before.

Some of my apps are as follows:

WeatherBug - weather info
Quick Settings - Fast access to volume settings, LCD flashlight, WiFi & GPS on/off, battery level
MyBackUp Pro - Paid version to backup programs & data.
Starbucks Card - Tracks balance; only one Starbucks card at a time.
andLess - To play FLAC files, but I use my 32GB Cowon S9 to listen to music, not my Droid.
Advanced Task Manager - KIlls tasks and uninstall apps
Barcode Scanner - Great for product info
EasyMoney - Paid version for tracking expenses
Better Alarm - Better than the default.
Linda Manager - File manager which allows you to delete files and install apps
Lookout - Antivirus app.
Where - Interesting program with various features like Weather, News, Reviews of places (bars, restaurants, hotels, etc), Local Coupons and Gas Prices, Traffic Report and some others. This is a work in progress app.
