So i'm going to build a CAD computer soon and i have something of a limited budget - I have heard that the 2500+ is a great oc'er so i think im going to use that. What are your reccomendations on setup, ram, and motherboards, and processor if 2500+ is obsol337 now.....

Thanks

2600 mobile is better overclocker then 2500 mobile it seems, maybe because its near 2 ghtz stock.. people get them into the 2.6-2.7 range on air memory... get some low cas lantency high speed memory.. as high as you intend to go for fsb. strictly overclocking the dfi infinity boards seem to be the overall best with fsb being stable at high frequencys but people STILL rave over the nf7 and nf7-s. an epox 8rda+ could be good for overclocking as well

anyone have any ideas for some nice memory? I'm looking for 1gb of the best sense this will be a oc'ed computer and for cad....

The Corsair TwinX PC3200LL 2x256 has done me fine...
Some might suggest the PC3200XL or the PC3500XL... more expensive, but a slightly lower latency.

Definetly go with a mobile 2500/2600 barton, a gig of OCZ EB 3700, and a DFI lanparty/infinty

Quick question regarding the OCZ ram.... it's 3700.... 466, the board only supports 400? or what...?

I have had 3 types of memory:

OCZ 3200 2-3-2-6 2x512

Corsair 3200ll-Pro 2x512

Infineon 3200 cas 2.5 2x512

The lower timing ram(ocz, corsair) showed absolutely no gain compared to the alot cheaper Infineon in sisoft sandra 2004. The infineon can goto 230 mhz stable @ 8-3-3-3, and 200mhz @ 6-3-3-2.5. I stuck with the infineon and got just as high overclock as possible for my [email protected] A7n8x-E Deluxe rig. The motherboard keeps me from pushing the FSB past 224. Get a NS7 2nd edition motherboard if you want to push the amd 32bit processor to its limits.

If you get a 2600 mobil with mid grade ram(save100$) and NS7 2.0 that would be my rig of choice for a budget, and it would beat my rig ;(

abit makes nice boards for OCing as well, i use a NF7-S it has every setting u need for OCing right in the bios and very fast reliable board as well

Just look at people's sigs for a bit too. Like as you see, a lot of people like DFI because it's good for gaming usually. I like my Asus A7N8X Deluxe boards because of the features. That and they've been the choice of Athlon XP lovers for a long time.

As well as I got a pretty nice overclock on my Athlon XP Mobile 2600 on a Zalman HSF. I have a Swiftech Heatsink (the kinda that looks like a porcupine made out of screws which is rated pretty well, and both versions of the Vantec Tornado (80mm and 92mm), but decided they were a little loud for my taste, so I stopped using them but they cool REALLY well.

You should also think about the kind of sound you can bare for the overclocking. You might have to look into other branches of stuff.

I don't know if a gaming board is the best way to go.... I personally have used MSI KM2M's, K7N2 Delta-L's (4 PC's in the house use this board) and my newer system has the ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe (have yet to OC my 2500+ but i head it can get 3200+ speeds

I'm not really understanding the sound thing here as well as the Memory timings......

I would say a 2600 Mobile Athlon, with a motherboard that has unlocked multipliers <the one in my sig does> and some decent pc3200 or pc3500 ram that has good timings. Im at 2.6ghz myself...never tried 2.7 accually...hmm

get a mobile... definetly mobile...worth the extra $ if you can afford get the 2600 and use a thermalright cooler.. i got a quiet 60mm delta on my slk-800 and i get practically room temp at stock

man those deltas hurt.. yesterday my fingers managed to roam into it and it certainly was bleeding... im gonna get into habbit of unplugging that when i work in case

how much better of an overclock would I get with a mobile? BAG says I could get to 3200+ speeds.... at least his sig does....

I think I will stick to my fan.... i've heard good things about it.....

i love my NF7-S, running 240/480fsb right now with my memory in sync.

I found a modified bios that really brought that alive. My board/memory would do around 210 with the standard ABIT bios, but now, my corsiar pc2700 ram that wouldn't do cas2 at stock is running 240fsb 3-3-3-8, which i about croaked when I saw the results. Makes me actually want to buy a newer date of the board and some better ram :)

you could get a mobile up to 2.5-2.7 ghtz on AIR
3200 is pretty conservative.. any barton can get 3200 even some throroughbreds
3200 speeds is 2.2 ghtz

Well considering my mobile barton is doing 3700+ speeds no problem...i think the mobile is the way to go man....:p

DFI LANParty NFII Ultra B or ABIT "NF7-S" nForce2 with an athlon mobile 2400+ 35w processor?

or is their an even better board out?

Been running my 2500 mobile at 2400 mhz with a Volcano 11 right out of the box. I won't go higher than that without a better cooler.

definately worth getting a mobile over a standard desktop chip. before i got my mobile i had a 2500+ unlocked, the highest i could get that thing up to was about 2.3GHz

I have a DFI lanparty kt400a.... excellent overclocker, with a 1700+ that I got to 2500+ with changed FSB (266 moved to 333) as well as a modded HSF, want it?

here's what i get on a 3dmark03 (Free version)

I will update in a few minutes with the bios settings for the ram and proc - tell me if i'm doing something wrong or can get more out of it....

i have CPUZ now if anyone wants to see that as well

should i go into Soft Menu III > CPU opperating clock speed > Custom and up it some more or whut....?

whats the temps
- on my dfi board cpu throttling is paranoid and throttles it to 50% unless its like vapochilled it seemed ... turn it off
-shutdown temperature... way too high... change it to like 70C if you can
-AGP aperture size- set it to half your system memory..

i edited it... use motherboard monitor to read the cpu temp.. best way to overclock is using the bios... also... those memory timings are really really relaxed... see if you can tighen em up ..memtest86 is your friend good start tho

you prob could have got a 6800 NU for verry little more then 9800 pro.. would have gotten more preformance but since your doing cad that extra texture memorys usefull if you got a 256 mb version

Sorry, I forgot to change the stats..... I have a 2500+ non mobile and a nf7 motherboard....

How do i use medmtest86? i have it downloaded and dont know where to start... have yet to hit a helpful point in readme....

What about the Abit AN7, is that any good?

[edit] Cuz well I just ordered an AN7 over an NF7-S, should I be hitting the "change item button" on my order asap or what?

[edit2] oh I love editing posts :D anyway yeh well, now I;ve switched to an NF7-S after some reading :)

People dont seem to realize that the XP2500's, both mobile and not, range greatly in their overclockability so saying you should get X amount of overclock out of it is just what you got. Not what they will get.

Right here on [H] they bought 3 XP2500's, all made within a narrow range of days from each other. One wouldnt overclock at all, not even a slight jump, nothing, One would handle a mild OC, maxed out around 200X11, and the third hit the roof of the other equipement in the test. The results are archived here somewhere.

Having said that I like the choice of the NF7-S 2.0 board. Abits have always served me well. And you will want the mobile chip for its unlocked multipiers. I would stay away from the volcano 12 heatsink if super loud noises coming out of ur case is something you want to avoid.

Hope ur CPU Ocs well for u.
