Best AMD cpu/mobo for OC'ing and Linux??

Just trying to find out what the current best bang/buck is with AMD. I'm helping my brother building a new AMD system and I haven't been following AMD as much lately. He basically just wants a near-high end computer that he can pair up with a GeForce 6800GT to play Doom3 good. But as this isn't the best time for upgrading with PCI-Express/Dual Cores/DDR2/etc. all looming in the not too distant future, he just wants a cheaper setup that can be overclocked pretty high to tide him over for about another year when he'll do a serious new system with all the new tech. He will have water cooling. We've thought about the following things:

CPU: XP 2500+ or 2600+ Mobile
Mobo: Abit NF7-S
Memory: 1 gig of pc3200 or faster

Any suggestions for either the cpu or mobo that is good for overclocking and not too expensive?

Also, I don't think this matters too much but he'll be using Linux. Is there any hardware that is more conducive to linux with drivers and such?

If this has been covered a million times then a link would also be appreciated. I've searched and have found a little info...but I'm still not sure. Thanks for any tips!!!

Anyone have an opinion on the which AMD cpu/mobo are the hot ones for overclocking right now? Just a quick opinion or even a link to another thread on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

Umm, NF7-S or that DFI board with a mobile 2500? That would b my guess.

Thats pretty much right. Any mobile Athlong XP really will do you fine. I've seen some people (kronchev) get some bad luck with the 45 watt mobile 2400+'s though. I have a mobile 2500+ and an NF7, myself, and I have it running at 2.625 GHz. :)

hey thanks for the responses today...looks like the nf7-s is a good way to go along with a mobile 2400 or 2600. BTW...which cpu tends to get a higher overclock, the 2400 35W or the 2600 45W???

Good choice on the mobo. Usually, the 2600 has a better chance of a good overclock, but there are some exceptions.
