I'm thinking about goin XP-120, anyone want to dissuade me?

I know fans have alot to do with how heatsinks perform.

be sure to check your mobo to see if the xp-120 will fit. if clearance is an issue you could goto the si-120. personally i'm going with the ninja scythe. it's rated very highly on spcr.

I've hear the Scythe Ninja (sp?) is reallly good with the Nexus fan. It was linked on the main hardocp page today or yesterday. It's a big 6/12 heatpipe design.

Thermaltake Big Typhoon is also an excellent choice for high powered, yet quiet, cooling.....

that is correct, the fins are spaced out further apart so air can past through easier ;)

I looked at the Zalman and the XP-120 - wound up with XP-120 and I've been extremely happy with it. Keeps things nice and cool in my case with great airflow - load temp generally sub 50ish.

Tried 9500, BT then ninja. Best results with ninja for me anyways, ymmw.

Another vote for the Ninja. On an AMD system, as long as your circulation is good, you don't even need a fan. Strap a Nexus at 7V and you'll be fine.

What about the Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro 64, its rated for all A64 single core, X2 to 5000+ & A64 FX.

yea but look at the pwm ic temps 51C! if you had the si-120/xp-120 dont you think those overall mobo temps would be cooler?

51c is nothing. On water cooled rigs with NO cpu fan to speak of, that chip runs into the 70's and even 80's under load....if you read up on the specs for that particular chip, it is spec'ed to handle CONTINUOUS temps of 90c+, and do it for YEARS....

And no, not much would cool it more except MORE airflow and more NOISE.....no thanks, I like quiet computers. Whining noisy fans are highly offensive to me :p

PWMIC can get hot, but i'd recommend putting a fan over the 3-stage power mosfets anyway.

The XP-120 with a decent fan moves a good bit of air down over the memory and in the general PWM area, but my PWM temp can still get well into the 50s under heavy load. And that is with great airflow through the case in general.

The XP-120 did NOT move enough air over the memory to make the 2x1gb Ballistix PC4000 memory I had not eventually start sucking. I'm not sure if any amount of cooling would have done that though - I think Crucial may not even be selling those kits any more and that's an entirely different story.

this is what im afraid of bc the ninja seems like the best/better hsf but moves air out the back of the case, while the xp/si-120 move air onto the mobo. that said the ninja is like 35-40 dollars w/o fan and the si-120 is like 50$ w/o fan.

which to buy?
