what is the best aim version?

i got the newest one, but i just cant stand it. For some reason, when i get offline, it shows that i am still online for another five minutes. So people think that im still online and try to talk to me and get pissed that i dont respond.

Before i formatted i had an older version that i liked better, but i dont remember which one it was.

So does anyone have a preference of which aim version they liked the best?

For a start, get a non-AOL client. Some of the most recommended include GAIM, Trillian, and Miranda. Another option is to get AOL AIM with DeadAIM.

I'm a fan of Trillian, myself.

I used trillian, and I wasn't so happy with the version that they have for free, and there is no way in hell I was going to pay for a free service.

That being said, I'm using GAIM right now and love it. It's so minimalist, its great, and covers all the major networks like trillian.

If you really must use AIM, then use an older version of the client. The last really tolerable version was (IMHO) 2.5. It doesnt support the distributed buddy list, but I've got so few folks in my list that I really give a crap about anyway that it doesn't matter.

Oldversion.com has a bunch of the old clients that you can download and play with.

Other than that, I'm a Trillian user mostly because of the skinning it has. Although, it's been acting really screwy with my Yahoo accounts lately even after I downloaded the latest, allegedly patched, version.

I use AIM 4.8 w/ DeadAIM. Works for me and only takes up 8 megs of memory instead of 23 w/ the newest.

Meh. GAIM has a bug in the latest release which prevents it from connecting to the Yahoo server.

I am using the same, and I love it. just go to oldversion.com to get them.

miranda 3.2 with 17 plugins = 5.8mb running

version 3.3, which will be out shortly will support "buddy is typing."
search google for miranda to see the rest of the changes. Light, simple, supports multi-protocols ncluding netsend.

Trillian's good better functions then aim but its to confusing unless your using multiple messangers. As for spyware its wintangent that comes with those stupid games on aim. and the popups comon now. also where do i find this deadaim and does it work with the newest crappy version 5.5 or something.

I'm a Trillian addict. I thought about buying Pro but I can't bring myself to do it, for something thats already free.

I completley agree. Trillian feels like some attempt to make a fancy looking instant messenger. Gaim feels more like AIM with dead aim installed and i feel better using it. It also supports plugins which is a great thing. I recommend guifications as one.

incase you're interested... i use aimution with aim 5.2.3292 it adds a whole lot of customizable options (i like it better then deadaim (which is sad cause i just found that out after paying for it). cloning, talking while away and skinning aim are some of my favorites. www.aimutation.com oh yeah, and it's free!
