What is the best 7970 performance wise right now? I am curious, there are so many different ones by so many OEMs. I don't care for noise, it doesnt bother me at all. I just want to know out of the box which 7970 will be the fastest. I am thinking about buying a 7970 since my 5870 can't handle playing games and watching tv shows on my other screens at the same time.

I would say it's a toss up between the Lightning and the Matrix

In my opnion His and Asus are better than the MSI, I don't like the MSI lightning, actually I wouldn't get any of this, because for almost the same price I can get 2x7950.. and that's what I did :p

    HIS HD 7970 X Turbo
    GPU Boost Clock: 1180 MHz
    GPU Base Clock: 1120 MHz
    Mem Clock: 6000 MHz (1500 MHz GDDR5)

    ASUS HD 7970 Matrix Platinum
    GPU Boost Clock: 1100 MHz
    GPU Base Clock: 1050 MHz
    Mem Clock: 6600 MHz (1650 MHz GDDR5)

    MSI HD 7970 Lightning BE
    GPU Boost Clock: 1150 MHz
    GPU Base Clock: 1070 MHz
    Mem Clock: 6000 MHz (1500 MHz GDDR5)

Well my Vanilla Gigabyte 7970s ( 3 of them in tri-fire ) all run 1100/1650 24/7 stock voltages. Ive had these since launch, you would be better off buying 2 7950s and overclocking them versus 1 7970 :)

I like the Asus cards (DCII & Platinum) because they have 4xDP and 2xDVI - None of the other cards (as far as I know) has 3 connectors of the same type.

But what about the games that have crossfire bugs and or don’t make use of the second GPU? You’re not left with that many games that effectively use 2 GPUs. Maybe if you only play AAA games months after they have been released. Yes, I let myself get sucked into a second 7970 and it’s just not worth it. :(

The Matrix card would be my first choice. Since the 5870 Matrix, these have been very well built cards.

7970 Matrix -- great card! Very tweakable, runs cool and has some bling to top it off. :)

(I played FC3 on Platinum last night for ~90 minutes @1200 core -- max temp was 61*)

If you order a 7970 Lightning from Newegg, it should be a BE. I ordered mid-December and I got a BE.
