for around $420, is the GIGABYTE GV-R797TO-3GD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition the most video card I can get for my money? Is there anything comparable or better I should be considering? All the research and benchmarks and reading lead me to conclude this is the one to go for at this price range. any thought/links etc appreciated. totally open to nvidia cards as well. eyeballing the 670 a long time but drivers sure seem to have made me a amd fan.

running an i5 2500k @4.2ghz on the machine this card will be in.
 
I've been doing a tons of research and everything as well.. the two top 7970's that I saw were the msi lightning and the asus matrix.. and apparently everywhere i've looked to purchase these cards are either discontinued/not available. The msi lightnings were just removed from newegg like a week ago, i don't get it... now i have no idea what the top performing 7970 is...
 
I think you should consider HD7950. You can save close to 25% depending on which one you get and you will only be about 5% performance behind HD7970. More card for the money IMO.

I like the Vapor X HD7950 as well but it is not built on reference HD7970 PCB.
 
Yeah if I was going to get a card like that I might consider it, I'm pretty locked in on getting CF 7970's once I find what actual card is the top performer right now.. since the matrix and lightning are apparently unavailable now.. :mad:
 
OP you can get a Sapphire HD 7950 boost. 925 mhz boost. stock voltage of 1.25v. easily overclocks to 1100 - 1150 mhz and matches HD 7970 Ghz

the HD 7950 is incredible value for money. at the same clocks its 5% slower than HD 7970. but costs USD 100 - 150 lesser.
 
I ended up ordering the Gigabyte GV-R797TO-3GD Seems to be the best all around.
