I would like to know what top 5 air coolers you recommend for overclocking a Q6600 G0 SLACR from 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz or even 3.6Ghz on air. 3.2 Ghz is what I want while 3.6 Ghz is the max I would ever want it to be. Lets say that the motherboard is P35/P45 since that is what I plan on using when I order the system upgrades today.

I'm considering a Arctic Cooling freezer 7 pro for the price, but I am not sure it can reach the speeds I want when combined with MX-2.

thanks

Thermalright Silver Arrow
Noctua NH-D14
Cogage Arrow
Thermalright Venomous X
Prolimatech Megahalem

I've got a Xigmatek S1283 with the hold down plate. It works quite well considering the price.

Going to want something much beefier than the AC Freezer if you're pushing a Q6600. prtuc2 suggested some great high-end high performance coolers, but if you can't afford them the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ does an amazing job for its price. It's about $10 more than the AC heatsink, allows dual 120MM fans, has four direct touch heatpipes as opposed to three on the S1283 and has been recorded to rival the TRUE120 at times. I had the S1283 and although it performed admirably with the Crossbow backplate, the wretched plugs used to mount the fans made me want to throw it in the bin. The Titan Fenrir is also another great semi-budget cooler as it's priced between the Hyper 212+ and the expensive top end and performs superbly.

the cogage true spirit is also a great budget cooler coming in at ~$40 + $10 (compatible bot-through kit from thermalright), in many instance it rivals the original TRUE rev.C and has even been shown to best it.

I had the arctic cooler freezer 7 pro on my q6600/q9550 and it was a decent cooler and nothing spectacular. I actually owned two of them and on one of them had the fan go out in less than 2 years. The other fan is still working well, but that was my secondary pc so it never had that much use. I recommend you buy the coolermaster hyper 212 as it has a much better ability to cool, relatively inexpensive, and can be used easily for future socket upgrades like socket 1366.

I currently use the coolermaster hyper 212 for my i7 930 and it does a great job.

Thank you all for the current recommended hs options.

I almost pulled the trigger on this Noctua NH-D14 earlier this morning, but then I thought that it may be overkill.
Is a NH-D14 overkill or required for a Q6600 to reach the 3.2 to 3.6 range?
Can the hyper 212 reach 3.2 to 3.6 stable? It looks like a great price

My upgrade path when I add newer gear will be
i5 750 | p55 (more than likely this route)
i7 920 | x58

I was also looking and reading reviews on a scythe ninja 3 and 1283 Dark Knight, with so many heatsinks to choose from its very confusing.

This is a page I was reading

What makes me question there recommendations is the fact that the thermalright xp-120 ultra extreme is not listed there. I thought this was still on top like it was 2 years ago.

It all really depends on how comfortable you are with your budget. If your budget allows the NH-D14 by all means get it as it is one of the top coolers today, but if splurging on that cooler hinders your ability from buying better hardware elsewhere I wouldn't get it as it would just about be overkill for a Q6600. The NH-D14 only really shines when mated with a heavily overclocked CPU. It is in those situations the cooler really pulls ahead of the competition. The Hyper 212+ is one of the best budget coolers at the moment and can comfortably compete with the more expensive coolers and would be my number one recommendation for you if you're strapped for cash. It might not look as awesome and intimidating as the more expensive cooler, but it certainly performs brilliantly and will definitely serve you well down your upgrade path. If your budget is unlimited prtuc2 in the second post in this thread basically listed all the "in" coolers at the extreme high end. Just do some research on each individual cooler and make your call from there. They each have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Out of that bunch, I'd personally go with the Venomous X or Megahalems. :)

Surprised no one suggested Thermalright Ultra Extrame 120 (or TRUE). I think SVC has it for $47?

+1 to this... I'm at 3.7GHz stable since the first day of purchase on an i7 920
